Has UCLA changed their policy on switching majors?

I was looking through the decision site, and I came across this:

"Additionally, you were admitted to UCLA according to the major you indicated on your application. It is unlikely that you will be approved to change majors after transfer. (Note: Business Economics, Economics, all Life Sciences, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology specifically prohibit changing into their departments after transfer.)"

I was accepted as a humanities major, and I wanted switch to Math/Applied Science, an unimpacted major. I will have to take two more courses at ucla, Linear Algebra and Differential Equations, that can be taken in the same quarter. What are my chances? I don't want to go to UCLA if I can only be a humanities major. I know people have said this was possible, but I am starting to doubt it after I saw the decision site.

I noticed that too and thought it was a little strange. I’d contact a UCLA counselor or representative to talk about that if I were you.

I’d recommend talking to your counselor during orientation. Also, I’ve heard of new transfer students going to the department of the major they want to transfer to and talking to their academic advisors. It is not a guarantee you’ll be able to switch majors, but you can at least try.

Where is that on the decision site?

I don’t see it :-/

@Cayton Do you know if this is a new thing?

@Ocnative On the Admission Contract tab, all the way at the bottom.

@CollegeDropout1‌

Well, I’ve never heard of it before.

As a UCLA Math major, I can say for certain I am 1000% certain (sorry I just watched a Maury Marathon) that if you pass L.A. and Differentials with at least a B you will get into the math department. The math department is not very impacted

Is funny you ask, because Ironically not every admitted UCLA math major survives… a lot of them can’t handle upper division math and end up switching to… Humanities.

FYI, I only recommend the Math/applied science if you are thinking of going to pre-med or have a future in something bio-statistics… Applied math is much more general and you can work in different industries.

@Dagoberto I wanted to do Math/Applied Science because there is an option called the individual plan where you can take any courses related to science. I was planning on fulfilling the degree’s requirements with some CS courses, do you know if they will allow me to do this? I also feel like this would not be that hard since I would only be required to take one Real Analysis class? I’m I right?

do you mean CS as in Computer Science or CS as in Chicano Studies?

@Dagoberto By CS I meant Computer Science! haha, I was actually admitted as a Chicano Studies major.

ROFL!!!

Hey Collegedropput1,

yes, there is a way to switch from one CS to the other CS…

PM me for details.

@dagoberto What is the way, I am curious as well. If you dont mind can you PM me?

(Note: Business Economics, Economics, all Life Sciences, Political Science, Psychology, and Sociology specifically prohibit changing into their departments after transfer.)

Does anybody know if I can add one of those majors as double major? While keeping the major I was admitted into? I’m not changing my major.

@globeneon From what I understand, capped majors will not allow you to switch into, or double major in, their department.
At least thats how it was for Psychology, which is why I applied as a Psych major (intending on declaring a double in Psych / Philosophy).

@Collegedropout1 This is what a counselor told me when I asked:
“An approval to change your major is not guaranteed and usually very difficult. If your acceptance of UCLA’s offer of admission depends on this information, you should contact the department of the major you wish to change to, directly. They will be able to tell you the likelihood of transferring into that major once the school year begins.”

@Freetofly112 THANK YOU! So I should contact them before submitting my SIR?

@CollegeDropout1 Sure! Yeah, if their answer could potentially change your mind about attending UCLA, then absolutely contact the majors department before submitting an SIR.

The strategy is I was talking about is join the Mathematics for Computation major, its not very impacted and is similar the CS majors from Samueli Department of Engineering.

@collegedropout1 If you wouldnt mind letting me know what they say. That would be great!
