If Manning is teaching anything (he’s a 21W prof), he is excellent.

i was considering trying to double in linguistics, so i was hoping to get 24.900 out of the way this fall. but since it’s not a good prof…should i just wait until next fall to take it? because i’d probably take a different HASS-D in the spring anyway, so i wouldn’t be too far behind in course 24 classes.

also, does anyone have an opinion on trying to take 18.02/3.091/8.01/7.012 in the fall and 8.02/18.03/HASS/HASS in the spring versus 3.091/8.01/7.012/HASS in the fall and 8.02/18.02/18.03/HASS in the spring?

There are pros and cons in both those schedules.

Taking all science classes and no HASSs can be hard. HASS classes are usually considered the easier classes, and having 4 psets / week is a lot (HASS classes usually have reading to do, but that’s a lot easier to punt if you don’t have time). That being said, I’ve taken 4 sciences in a semester and I was fine.

On the other hand, taking 18.02 and 18.03 at the same time can also be hard (or maybe I just say that because I HATE math psets…). I’d ask Laura about the difficulty of taking 18.03 without first taking 18.02 (although they are coreqs, so it shouldn’t be impossible), but for me the problem would mostly be in the fact that I would hate to have to do 2 math psets each week. You might not mind this.

So I’d choose the first option and go with no HASSs first semester, but other people would advise differently. Basically it’s up to you.

Oh, and I don’t know if this concerns you, but to get early sophomore standing you need to take a CI-H first semester, so just keep that in mind.

And, IIRC, my year the 18.02 and 18.03 psets were due the same day each week. Yuck.

Does anyone know anything about 21H.301? Workload, professor, etc.?

do you think it would be better to take 18.02 and 18.03 at the same time, or 18.03 and 18.06? i’ve had parts of multivariable before, and i took a diff eq class, but i don’t feel prepared enough to try to ASE out of them; i’m not sure if that would make any difference cause i’m sure they’re all going to be hard regardless.

and i know that 24.900 has a bad prof this semester and a slightly better one in the spring. i’m thinking about concentrating/minoring and maybe trying to double in it. but i’m thinking about just waiting to take 24.900 until next fall. because i probably would only take 24.900 this year, so i wouldn’t be too far behind, right?

In general, you’re fine starting most majors at the beginning of sophomore year, but doubling often requires a little more logistical maneuvering. You should look at the courses required for a 24 major and see if 24.900 is a prerequisite for other classes you’d like to take at the beginning of sophomore year.

I see no harm in trying to ASE out of something anyway as a freshman (as an upperclassman, the grade is recorded). Try it - if MIT tells you that you don’t know enough, you take the class.

Does anyone here know anything about 21L.011 (The Film Experience)? Honestly, I’m just looking for an easy HASS that doesn’t have too much work / has easy grading… any info would be appreciated!

Star*: From what I have heard (I never took it), 21L.011 would probably fit what you are looking for, and is also fairly interesting.

It has a final, though, so if you were looking to reduce your load during finals week, it won’t help there.

Thanks Jessie. Yeah, I originally picked it because it looked interesting, I’m just also really going to need an easy class next semester. And yeah, finals week will be HELL.
