Hate to be the bearer of repetition, BUT...

I am about to go into my sophomore year at Michigan State University.
I'm studying English and Theatre.

I'm considering transferring to the University of Michigan because it has a better reputation than State, especially for their programs in the arts.
My thinking is: better undergrad school = better grad school = better job prospects.

However, I'm comfortable at State and doing very well.
(I have a 4.0 GPA, in the Honors college, in an Honors community service group, have a job working part time at a law office.
Also, in high school graduated 3rd in my class with a 3.97 GPA & I got a 27 on my ACT)

My question is- is it worth it to transfer?
&& Does any have advice regarding when I should transfer in so I have a better chance of being accepted? Winter 2010 or Fall 2010?

yes u should transfer. Whether or not ur in honors means little to employers. They only care if u go to a target. As for the validity of your thinking process, it depends. If u want MBA, ur not entirely right. If you’re talking about med/law/other academics, ur right.

I’m not really sure what I want to do after I graduate, but law school is definitely a possibility. Thanks for your input.

I’d say transfer to Michigan only if you’re not happy at State.

A girl I know at MSU graduated with a 3.9 GPA, got her JD from UVa and accepted a job with a Law Firm in Chicago that paid her $140,000 right out of Law school (that was back in 2007). A 4.0 GPA from a school the caliber of MSU will take you far. Yes, Michigan is a top 20 university in the nation, but MSU is not exactly chopped liver. Unless you wish to go into a Consulting or IBanking job straight out of college, I seriously recommend you stay at MSU. If you transfer to Michigan, you will indeed graduate with a more “respected” degree, but your GPA could take a hit. Of course, if you can maintain a 3.8 GPA at Michigan, you will not feel an impact. however, should your GPA drop to 3.5, I would say you will have done yourself a disfavor by transfering because a 4.0 at MSU will be better received by Law schools and PhD programs than a 3.5 GPA from any of the nation’s top universities.

You know that the MSU Honors College is near/at the level of UM (by the standards and the qualifications set by MSU). At least from what I heard.

Cdz, thats nice if employers care if she’s in honors. Many only look at whether she went to a target school.

Seeing target school etc… now makes me question what is more of a target school for one majoring in political science ( international relations etc…) and double major/ minor in economics: University of Michigan- Ann Arbor, George Washington University, New York University, UM-Twin Cities, UW-Madison etc… how does one know if your university is a target school for your future career?

OP, if you plan to attend a graduate school and your already making a great record at Michigan State University ( honors college) then I don’t see how your chances of acceptance can be harm with a top graduate school. There are so many things one can factor into in deciding if it’s worth to transfer, so I can’t really give a answer.

To find out if its a target school, go to the career center and look at whether the government comes to that school to recruit. For example, CIA comes to UMich to recruit. UMich is one of CIA’s target schools.

Yeah but the OP is looking to go to a grad school, not getting a job. Grad school will see that she is graduating with Honors.

@ the OP: if you can maintain a 4.0 GPA in Honors College, your chances are wonderful.
