bump bump bump

Need to see that GPA

4.8 on a scale with regular classes on a 5 point scale and ap/honors on 6 point scale. Ive taken/taking 9 ap classes and about 12 honors.

oh and the GPA scale works like this in a regular class, 5 is 100, 99 is 4.9, 98 is a 4.8 etc…same for AP/honors but up a point

So is the 4.8 weighted or unweighted? If it’s a 4.8 (like a 3.8) unweighted, then you have a shot. If that’s the weighted GPA, I don’t know how that converts to 4.0 scale.

seanmac93, I agree with ZeldaF, after reading your posts I still can’t figure out if your GPA is weighted or unweighted or whether it’s on a 5.0 or 6.0 scale. What is your guesstimate of your unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale?

SAT: 2070 Average admitted SAT for USC. I’m not sure there’s much value to taking the SAT twice more. One more time should be sufficient

UWGPA: 4.8 on a 5.0 scale is a 3.8 on a 4.0 and on a 6.0 scale it translates to a 3.2. If it’s on a 5.0 scale you’re again at the mid-point for admits two years ago. If it’s on a 6.0 scale you’re well below that number.

ECs:Almost entirely music related. Do you plan on studying music wherever you go to college? Do you have awards for your music performance? Commitment to an EC is important, I’d emphasize that in your essay.

USC is switching to the CommonAp this year, that could dramatically raise the number of applications (Michigan saw a 25% increase their first year). Generally speaking that’s going to make USC an even tougher place to get into. Clear up the unweighted GPA confusion and maybe we can give you a better assessment.

ok i just converted, my school only does weighted so it was (so this is a weighted 4.0 scale)
freshman year-4.05
sophomore year- 4.08
junior year- 4.53
average-4.22

USC wants an unweighted GPA. My son attended a school for two years that only weighted them as well so we converted it. Can you convert to unweighted or share your actual grades so someone can do it for you?

ok here is an unweighted GPA on a 4.0 scale.

freshman 3.5
sophomore 3.5
junior 3.7
average 3.56

Your GPA falls far below the average for admitted students (which is around a 3.8) and your SAT is in the middle 50%. Unless you raise your SAT astronomically (2200+) I don’t think you’d get in.

Maybe spring admit? But definitely not fall with the number you have now.

Statistics from the 2010 entering class (as yet unconfirmed rumors are that this year’s class is even stronger statistically):

50% of the class had UW GPA of 3.75 or higher in high school
88% of the class was in the top 10% of their high school class
Your CR SAT is exactly at the mid-point
Your Math SAT is around the 80th%-tile
Your Writing SAT is at the 25th%-tile

Your GPA improved last year and you seem to have a somewhat rigorous schedule. GPA tells the story of how you apply yourself over the long haul. SATs show how you perform on a given day. In that sense I’m not sure how much another SAT score will help your cause. If you do pull a 2200 it only serves to reinforce the idea that you (maybe) didn’t apply yourself as much as you should have in high school.

I view USC as a reach for you. Not impossible, but you need to work on separating yourself from an increasingly competitive pack. You’re going to need to get some great recommendations and generate a couple of compelling essays in order to improve your chances. I’d focus on telling the story of your improving GPA and presenting a case for what you bring to USC.

I’d like to offer a different perspective to the OP. My son also went to a Top 100 high school. It was a two year residential school that drew from all over the state. Everyone there was in the top 5 at their old high school. Most classes were considered college level and my son got a solid mix of As and Bs. When we calculated his unweighted GPA (the school weighted all classes and did not do unweighted GPAs), what saved him was the 3.97 average he had from the first two years at his old school. He was still below the average for USC, but was offered the Presidential Scholarship. His SATs were good but not “perfect”. He had a 2200 with everything 700 and up. He was a NMF, but was offered to interview for Presidential separately from that.

I tell you all of this to sat, no one knows what you can expect based on your stats. We are all just guessing, but I do think USC will look at the rigor of your high school when considering your grades. I would definitely take the SAT one more time. Tried to convince my son too. He never took it Senior Year at all. I was hoping he might be interviewed for Trustee if he could raise it a little higher. Good luck to you!

thanks for the input everyone i realize that USC is a reach school for me, but i think i can get my SAT up enough and i will have solid grades for my first semester of senior year so maybe i have a shot but thanks.

oh and about the rigor of my schedule…

ive taken/taking 9 ap classes and ive taken 12 honors classes
