Have a blast at SLS!

Good luck to all attending SLS. Come back and let us know what you thought.

My D will be attending Session 2 which starts June 14th. I'm looking forward to seeing what her reaction to the WP experience will be. She will be missing the last 4 days of school (finals week) to attend SLS. With every thing she needs to do this week it will a wonder if we can get her packed and on the plane Friday morning. She will be staying with relatives who will drive her to West Point Saturday morning. I'm sure it will be an amazing week!

Took S to the airport early this morning. Last we heard... he had linked up with several SLS kids on the flight up. They had been greeted by a cadet in Newark and were on the bus headed for campus.

Hi aprouddad,

I hope take you have time to share your son's impressions of his week at SLS. Is he coming home today? My daughter left this morning for NJ; relatives will be driving her to WP on Saturday.

I hope your son enjoyed his experience there. I can't wait to hear what my D thought of it.

I will be a junior after this summer. Are there any requirements for SLS?

Can you give me any tips to get in? I really want to go, the military is my life.

My D received an informational email from West Point in December telling her about SLS and a link to the application. I don't remember too much about the application, but I think it asked some general questions about GPA, leadership positions and sports. They did want test scores: PSAT, SAT or ACT. My daughter hadn't yet received her PSAT scores when she sent in her application. Within days of her sending in her SLS application (online) she received a letter from WP saying they needed test scores. Her PSAT scores arrived soon after and she sent them in. She received her invitation to SLS in mid Jan.

Advice: Prepare for your PSATs (or SAT / ACT) and do the best you can; apply right away for SLS when it opens in December; take challenging classes and get the best grades possible; seek out leadership positions; and participate in sports (good running skills seem to be beneficial).

There is an article in Pointer View about SLS in the June 20th issue.

http://www.usma.edu/publicaffairs/PV/yr2008/08JUN20.pdf

Enjoy.

All you need is PSAT scores?
Is 150 and higher a good range? I took the PSAT's in the 10th grade and I manged to achieve 150

By the way, thanks for all the information. This is a really helpful forum.

My S returned home Friday night from SLS and said it was really fun. They did so much stuff from 5 a.m. to 11 pm including the military training & classes. He's made so many friends there and already been in touch with all of them sharing pictures and all.

Moritsuna,
You may want to read some SLS threads from earlier this year. There are a few that ended in Feb that are very helpful. Kids and parents were sharing test scores, stats, GPA and other information.

You will also read that only a total of 800 kids are accepted between the 2 SLS sessions. From reading these boards you will find that a number of qualified applicants who were not accepted for SLS in 2007 did received appointments to West Point Class of 2012. Doing well in school, preparing for your SAT/ACT tests and seeking leadership opportunities will help you not only in your USMA application, but for any other college you plan to apply to.

The threads stop at May, I can't access further behind. (end of page 3)

When you are on the main forums page for West Point, go to Search Thread and type in some random year(I put in 2005 and 87 threads came out so try to put a later year to find more results).

-Saw

Moritsuna,

At the bottom of page 1 there are some boxes that you can click on which will ask you if you want to see threads from 1 month ago, 6 months, last year or even from the beginning.

Click on 'from the beginning', then just to the right there is another box that says, 'show threads' click on that box.

Go to page 10 (Jan 2008) and read:
SLS question
Questions regarding SLS rejection letter
SLS time frame

There are probably more threads that will you find interesting to read and a wealth of information.

Moritsuna,

Our son is one of those who did not get into SLS session, but is a new cadet candidate for class of 2012.

Best advice, lesson learned too late for our son: Apply within the first few days the SLS application is posted on the USMA website (late Dec., as I remember). He was waiting on information about whether or not he was selected for Am. Legion Boys State (one of the boxes to check on the app) and by the time he was given the final answer on Boys State, the SLS sessions had filled up.

From our experience, it is probably best to go ahead and fill out the application, even with missing information, and then notify USMA of additions to your qualifications than to wait until you know about other activities. Just a thought.

Best of Luck!

Thanks. I have to work harder on my PSAT scores.

Hey yall, I just got back from the 2008 SLS a week and a half ago. It was probably the most fun I will have this summer. If anyone has any questions, feel free to ask.

anything really funny that happend?
what was the coolest thing you did?
oh, and for future refrence, what were your PSAT scores?

I got some funny for ya. This girl in my squad was from the upper peninsula of Michigan, and she had an accent that wasn't really thick, but it was noticeable. (In case you don't know, U.P. accents sound like a cross between Minnesotan and Canadian.) She really exaggerated her "Oh"s and "no"s. Anyway, when we were doing the Confidence Obstacle Course, she got interviewed by a bunch of reporters who were hanging around watching us get muddy. During the interview, we heard her say "Ooooohhh, yaahh" and we all busted out with a big "OHHHH, YAAHHH!!" that I think got picked up by the TV camera. So, somewhere, there is a news show floating around where this girl turns bright red after her friends say "OHHH, YAAHHH!!" in the background.

The coolest thing we did was easily shooting the machine guns. A bunch of guys from the 10th Mountain Division came out on Thursday and showed us all of their weapons and vehicles and we all went up on this hill and fired an M249 SAW and an M2 .50 caliber machine gun. They only let us shoot blanks, not live ammo, but it was still ultra B.A.

My PSAT scores were 72CR, 72M, and 74W, for a total of 218, or 2180 on the SAT scale.

that is awsome that you got to go, it sounds like you had a great experince!!!
