I just wanted to wish all of you matriculating at Rice U a great, wonderful, busy, O-week! DS is excited to meet his o-week group, and his team has fun things planned for you -
Campus is looking great, though you will have to wait another few weeks for the rec center to get finished. Have a blast! :)

Has anyone seen the inside of the new dorms or servery?

the new servery isn’t done, currently theyll be eating in an airconditioned tent

anxiousmom, your son is an advisor in my sister group. We’ve got some great things planned for our new students.

The new servery is done. McMurtry’s commons is still under construction, but the servery has been completed.

NYSkins1; That’s my boy! He knows I post here, but takes it with good grace… ;)

Some fun photos from O Week! Enjoy!

A note to any parents out there who aren’t having the time of their life at o-week. My daughter was one of those rare kids who wasn’t thrilled with it. (If you’re shy, it can be a bit challenging.) If you and your kid are in that boat, don’t worry! They’ll love Rice, anyway. My daughter does.

One other thought occurred to me about o-week. Although my daughter wasn’t that crazy about it, she really liked her o-week group participants. In fact, they continued to get together once a month for lunch her whole freshman year. For all I know, that will continue this year. On top of that her o-week advisor (a faculty member) turned out to be one of her professors last year, so that was a nice connection. So even if your kid is a bit overwhelmed by all the rah-rah of o-week, he or she has probably gained a lot from it.

There is one thing you have to say about OWeek, though. It does not let a shy kid sit in their room and get withdrawn. It will not happen. They will at least get to know their group and get out to meet people. It may take them out of their comfort zone, but it does break the ice.

THANK YOU FOR POSTING THE LINK FOR THE PICTURES! I’ve been dying to see some of O-week, especially the M articulation Ceremony. I didn’t see my son, but did see 3 of his suitemates.

SingersMom: I agree! I think it would be pretty much impossible to feel left out during O-Week. Oh, and my daughter corrected me about the reunions of her O-Week group. They met for lunch once a week all last year!

O-Week is just finishing up right now and I can honestly say it was one of the best weeks of my life.

The enthusiasm is infectious…it’s impossible not to get caught up in it.

I wasn’t particularly wild about my O-Week group but have met so many amazing people in my college. I think the most valuble part of this week was meeting all the RAs, associates, masters, & upperclassmen who are willing to help with anything and everything. Their support is incredible and I feel confident that whatever happens over the next four years, I will always have people who I can talk to about anything.

Rice is truly an amazing place and I can’t imagine myself anywhere else.

O week was so much fun! I’m sad it’s over (although Dis-O was pretty great as well)
