Have any questions about Tabor Academy? I can answer them!

I am currently attending and would be thrilled to answer any questions!

Sure! I have a son who may be interested in applying next year. One concern is geographic diversity - Tabor seems to have a very strong Massachusetts presence. Does it “feel” that way in reality? Also, is it possible to try crew as a new student, never having rowed before? Or is it tough to break into? Thanks for any info!

I can answer as well. We have family that has attended Tabor. It definitely has a fair amount of local kids. It it also has a real international contingent. It’s maritime courses are very attractive to a diverse group. Most people row for the first time as an inexperienced new student. There isn’t much crew for kids pre 9th grade anywhere. My child plans to row next year as a new student with no experience wherever that may be.

Hi @GMC2918 ! Even though it may seem like it is in the heart of NE and might have “the MA presence” it really doesn’t. Tabor is its own little community, within that there is a small group of so called “preps” that embody that specific mindset. I am actually going to attempt crew my first year here. The coach was thrilled to learn of my interest and many other new students are going to try as well. Tabor has many rules the average student needs to keep in mind at all times of the day, but it overall has a relaxed feel, with a rigorous curriculum.

What do you mean by a lot of rules? Do you think Tabor has more rules than most other boarding schools?Approximately what time do Seawolves go to bed during the week? Do you get enough sleep? Do you nerdy kids fit in okay there?

What is Tabor’s policies re: Getting in trouble/doing something stupid? Is it one strike and you’re out (would assume so for drinking/drugs) but for other infractions like leaving campus without proper permission, etc. is there a student peer review or honor council?

@VACAlover At tabor they used to have a one strike policy but changed that. You now go through a Disciplinary Committee hearing, where your punishment is decided. The committee consists of the headmaster 2 teachers, both heads of school, and your class presidents. If you leave campus w/o proper permission and get caught you get placed on Dean’s Warning for 9 months. If within that span of time you do it again you get excused from school. Hope I helped!

@PossiblePrepMom At Tabor we have around the same amount of rules as any other prep school but they are constructed so we are not restricted from our independence. Freshmen have lights out at 10:30, sophomores and jrs are at 11 and seniors don’t have it. I feel like I do get enough sleep. “Nerdy” kids do fit in. Everyone fits in because there are so many different types of people.

I am considering attending Tabor this fall as an incoming Junior (not a repeat junior). Any advice for someone entering the school this late? How difficult do you think it would be?

HI! We are in and Tabor was Vacakid’s #1 choice! So happy to be going to revisit day!!

@skierone I’m currently a freshman and a girl down the hall in my dorm was just like you. She fit in right away and had no problems. I doubt you will since everyone is so nice and welcoming. Just be yourself and you’ll do great.

OK-question re Tabor. We are going tomorrow for a tour. Any suggestions for a place to eat lunch or breakfast? Thanks!

@sadieshadow I’m sorry I didn’t reply in time. Down the road there is a small shop called Kate’s Simple Eats and in the other direction there is a a place called Uncle Johns.

It was great. We are at Kate’s. Thanks!

@sadieshadow how was the day? Our revisit is Thursday, any suggestions on things not to miss? Any pros/cons of the school you can share?

We thought the school and the surrounding community were lovely. We had a little time to kill so popped in to the Sippican Historical society museum which was interesting. We also ate at Kate’s Simple Eats which was delicious. As far as the school, for us it is just what we are looking for although we are early in the process. Strong academics, nice communit, a family feeling. The setting is of course incomparable. The new dormitory was impressive. What other school(s) are your revisiting? Congratulations to your child.

bump

How about the laundry service? Do most kids use it? Are there laundry facilities in each dorm? Thanks!

@skierone About half of the boarders use the service. (I don’t) The new dorm and Baxter have laundry facilities but not other dorms. The laundry room is under the chapel and in close proximity to all dorms.
