i just received my forms today to register for any APs im going to take… currently im in APlit&comp and AP Bio… I was wondering if i should bother taking them. I checked tcnj’s website but i feel like all these schools are so unspecific when it comes to telling us whether or not they even accept AP credit anymore…

I heard that AP Bio wont help me at all since I wont be taking a general biology course (atleast thats what the curriculum on the website says … correct me if im wrong though! lol) therefore taking it would be pointless since it doesnt cover classes such as microbiology and biochem…

and im just making sure that i have to take this writing class (not the remedial one … I tested out of those on the SATs) … and if itd be worth it to take the AP (im pretty sure i can get a 3 or better on it)… or if tcnj just doesn’t accept the credit :/

i know i might have been all over the place with this post lol sorry !!!

No problem, I understand your question!!

You’re right, there would be no point in taking either the Lit or Bio AP tests if you are taking them to test out of classes at TCNJ. They won’t replace any of the courses that you’ll need to take. The only one that I would recommend taking is Psych since you will take that here, though from your post I guess you’re not in that class (I didn’t take it in high school either) As you said, you test out of the writing course here with SAT scores, which you already did.

awesome! lol… so wait. here’s where i am confused… Do I still have to take a writing course at all (aside from the remedial course) ? 'cause I was under the impression that all college freshman no matter what had to take one writing class. If not, that’s really great lol :P

also… i take general psychology as a class… just not AP. i really do enjoy the class, so I actually do really well in it. maybe I will consider taking the AP. However, say I get a 5 on that (wishful thinking) … would that affect my college gpa at all? like for example… I may want a psych class as a cushion since i know i can do well in the course (since i already have a background) and i feel like if im really screwing up in one of my harder classes then maybe that will even out my gpa (therefore itd be worth it to just take the class in college). or do i automatically still get a grade for the course to be factored into my gpa even though its just AP credit?

lol that might be a dumb question but i honestly have no clue! thanks again for being so helpful :)

I’m not 100% sure about the remedial writing course you are talking about vs a different writing course. Either way, all freshman are required to take WRI 102 (Academic Writing) unless they test out. In order to test out, you must get 1)SAT scores above 580 in BOTH math and reading OR 2) at least a 26 on the ACT OR 3) An AP score of at least 4 in English Lit or Comp, US History, or World History. Let me know if that’s something different than what you’re asking.

Transferring in credit from an AP test will not affect your GPA, but you will receive credit for it. In order for Psych to affect your GPA, you would have to take it here. I’m in Psych now though and can tell you that it’s not a difficult class at all. Especially since you’re already taking it now, it will be very easy for you.

yes, you did answer my question:) and that was the answer i was hoping to hear lol. one last question about this… haha… if i were to get out of a class here with ap credits, would i have to take another class in place of that, or do i just get once less class that semester?

If you got out of a class at TCNJ from your AP scores, I guess you wouldn’t technically have to take a course in place of it, since you can be a full-time student with only 3 classes. However, I wouldn’t recommend doing that. Instead, you would use that space to fulfill liberal learning requirements by taking classes that aren’t related to your major. For example, an art, history, women and gender studies course, etc. Each class fulfills certain requirements which you have to keep track of in order to fulfill them all to graduate.

Hi can you read my post??!

Yes, I can see it, Nycitystudent. Or did you mean a post that you submitted previously?

Nycitystudent, I just found the other post that you wrote in another thread, is that the post that you’re talking about? If so, if you want to know your chance of getting into the nursing program, post your stats here and I will tell you what I think, though as I’m not admissions I can’t say for sure. Or if you have any other specific questions let me know!

Oh wow i didnt even know you commented back lol i posted up a post, and i havent had any replys if you could read it that would be great. Also, about nursing, how is it from your experience? Do you really need to have a passion? And need to be excellent in math and science? Which are my weaknesses.

Nycitystudent:
I really enjoy being a nursing student at TCNJ. It’s really a great program; I’ve learned more than I ever thought I could, and I love the professors. I would say that you need to have a passion for it- the courses are very difficult and it helps a lot if you have a true interest in what you are learning. As for the difficulty of the courses, read the posts that I’ve posted previously, a few of them talk about what courses are like and what kind of work you can expect to get. You definitely don’t need to be great at math, there’s almost no math in the freshman courses (if any at all). The sciences, on the other hand, are the major part of your freshman year. The core classes are biochemistry, anatomy and physiology and microbiology, which are all sciences.

If science is a weakness, that’s okay, you just need to be proactive in getting help for courses that you know you will have trouble with. Study really hard and a lot, form study groups, take notes as you read the textbook, make notecards, etc.

TCNJ also has a great tutoring program that offers tutoring for all of the freshman nursing courses. There are tutors to help you in biochemistry, anatomy and physiology and microbiology, and I know a lot of people that use them and say it is a great help. So while the sciences are the majority of the major this year, there are definitely ways for you to get help in them.

I appreciate for your time answering. I am most likely going to take remdial classes and im getting a tutor and the areas that i will be working on are math and science… I dont know about the college you are speaking of im assuming its in NJ lol which i attend highschool im Teaneck,NJ. but i applied to NY city schools. I dont have a “passion” for it, im just interested in studying it, im going to start off with CNA to get a feel of nursing and if i like it and i want to continue with nursing then thats what im going to do. Instead of rushing through it. But hopefully nursing goes good for me. Thanks again for replying.

Hi, Can you tell me if students can ever have off on Fridays when choosing classes in this major? Or is it a preset 5 day schedule basically? Thanks for any answers!

i have somewhat of a silly question, but what bank should students use at tcnj? are there any atm’s on campus or bank locations nearby?

@dgbegbie: Nursing students can absolutely arrange their schedule so that they can have a day or two completely off. It depends when classes are available, though, so though sometimes students may be able to get a Friday completely off, there may be times when a student may only have Wednesday off if a class is only available on a Friday. Usually it is possible though; I have a friend who arranged her schedule so she could have off on both Thursday and Friday! Her schedule is packed on the other days, but then she had an extended weekend.

@julierossi: In the student center there is a Wells Fargo atm. I believe that there is a $2.50 charge or so to make a withdraw if your bank is not Wells Fargo, but I’m not completely sure of the amount. That’s the only bank or atm on campus, though I’m pretty sure that there’s got to be a bank somewhere nearby.

hey… so i havent posted on this in a while so idk if youre going to ever read it haha but i might as well give it a shot… i just got my schedule online and i was put into the unitary man environment class… but is says its a “discussion lecture” … i was just wondering, whats the difference between a regular lecture and a discussion lecture? lol

also, i was wondering how easy it was to switch to the same class only at a different time since it would work out with my schedule better…

thanks!!

Hey vbee! Haha don’t worry, I got an email that you had posted here so I knew to check it :)

I’m not quite sure about the difference between the discussion lecture vs. a regular lecture…maybe the size? Unitary man and environment is one of the smaller nursing classes that you’ll have this year, with around 20-30 people or so, while Anatomy is in the lecture hall with every nursing student. Also, in NUR110 (Unitary man and environment), you do have group discussions, so come to think of it that’s probably why. Most of the time, though, she’ll be going over powerpoints.

I think it’s relatively easy to switch class times, but it does depend on the class time that you want to switch into and whether or not its full. If you do want to switch, I’d email your adviser, whose name should be in the right hand column on your PAWS account. You may not have one yet though, in which case I would suggest emailing someone in registration to find out who to contact to change it.

Let me know if you want to anything else, or about other classes now that you see your schedule!

thanks so much for the quick reply!! haha
one last thing… these are the last names of my professors for this semester -
Anthony Uzwiak, Matthew Winkel, Trina Gipson-Jones, Joanne Billmers … if you happen to know anything about these professors - like how difficult they are or what i should be aware of, let me know! it can be brief haha i dont mean to have you write reviews on them all im just trying to get a feel for what im getting into this fall!
thanks again - youre awesome!!! :)

Yup, I had them all except Winkel, who I guess is your FSP professor. I’m going to send you a private message about them, so I’ll get into more detail there, but they were all awesome! Honestly, some of them were the best teachers I’ve ever had.

Let me know if you got my message…I hit send, but it seems as if it disappeared, which stinks because I wrote a lot X(
