Have any questions? Freshman Nursing Major

Did you also apply to the rutgers program?

Yes, I did, and was accepted there as well. I believe they have a good nursing program too, though I don’t know anything about it now. I much preferred TCNJ’s size, campus and location to Rutgers.

I’m a dual enrolled student in Florida, and I’m considering attending the college of New Jersey as a nursing major. Ill be graduating high school with an associates degree as well as a high school diploma. My question is, will I have to enter the program as a freshman or will I be admitted as a junior, since I already have my prereqs and gen Ed done? I really don’t wanna have to do all 4 years since ill already have an AA under my belt!

Hi Sarahgoot,

I can’t tell you anything with 100% certainty, as I don’t work in admissions. However, I believe that you would essentially be entering the program as a freshman. At TCNJ, you are accepted into the nursing program from freshman year; we do not have the kind of program where you cover the gen ed requirements for 2 years and THEN apply to the nursing program. Here we begin nursing courses freshman year, and I believe that the only nursing course that you can transfer from another school is microbiology. That being said, you would probably be like a freshman and have to take those freshman nursing courses. However, some of your other gen. ed courses that you have already completed may be able to transfer (like art, history, etc.)

This is SUCH a great thread…thank you for creating it and being available so long to keep it going! D applied and is waiting for her results!

Three questions if you don’t mind:

What is the area like surrounding TCNJ? I know it is right next to (in?) Trenton, and when we went for the tour, we got a little lost and went through a sketchy neighborhood. Do students spend time off campus in surrounding areas?

What are the dorms like? We saw a sample dorm that was undecorated and TBH, it looked kinda scary :). Also, is there a common area to hang out on the floors? Are upper classmen dorms better?

I know you are not in admissions, but do you think D’s stats give her a chance at the nursing program based on some of your experiences? SAT 1280/1600 & 1960/2400. ACT 29. Lots of community service. 14 hours of shadowing a doctor. Leadership, clubs, theater stuff. 4 APs, 3 college classes, Nat Hon Soc, Scholastic writing award.

Hi cakeisgreat, I’m so glad you’ve found the thread helpful!! Congrats and good luck to your daughter! In response to your questions:

1) TCNJ is in Ewing, not Trenton, though yes, Trenton is about 15 minutes away. It is not the BEST area, but I would say that it is just as safe in comparison to most towns, especially those around college campuses. I’ve never felt threatened. I also don’t walk around the streets at night. If there is some suspicious activity going on or something in particular happens, TCNJ is really good about it; I’ve signed up for text messages and my parents receive phone calls when there’s been something to look out for in the area. But it’s safe; just stay with at least one other person if you’re out at night and try to know where you’re going beforehand. But really, I wouldn’t worry too too much about safety, especially in comparison to where some other colleges are located!

Freshman year students will very rarely be off campus, since you can’t have a car. Within walking distance from campus there is a bowling alley, a 7-11…and that’s about it!! Not much to do without a car off campus, though TCNJ’s college union board (essentially student activies group) offers GREAT trips and activities on campus nearly weekly; I’ve been to NYC, Philadelphia, and seen shows, museums, aquariums, concerts, Six Flags, and even overnight trips to places like Baltimore. If you don’t have a car there’s still tons of opportunities for activities on and off campus. Since sophomore year when I’ve had a car on campus, I do go off campus, more to places like the movie theater, out to eat, Princeton and New Hope.

2) I actually think that the freshman dorms at TCNJ are great. When I first moved in and saw my undecorated dorm, however, I’ll admit, I freaked out and had second thoughts about it all!!! But that’s because it’s old, yes, and there was nothing to see but old floor, walls and furniture. Once you decorate the dorms they can be really nice!! They’re much bigger than at other schools, the murals in the hallways are nice decoration, and best of all, we have sinks!!! You have no idea how useful it is to have a sink in your room- I can’t imagine having gone to another school and walking all the way down the hall to wash a plate or brush my teeth! Also if there is ever something wrong in the room, like a light is out or something, you can easily submit a work order online and usually staff comes within a day to fix it- sometimes within 10 minutes! Some upperclassman dorms are definitely better- I got lucky and lived in Eickhoff, the same building as the cafeteria sophomore year, and it is beautiful and like living in a hotel! You get your own bathroom and everything is so nice and new. The older uppperclassman dorms, I will admit, are not so great, but you make do. They’re totally liveable.

3) It sounds like your daughter’s stats are good. Good SAT and ACT, with challenging classes and good activities. I would imagine she would get in, but as you know I can’t say.

Feel free to ask anything else that comes to mind!

Wow! Thank you so much for your detailed response! This answers all my concerns very well, and has completely set my mind at ease. Now…for the long wait to see if she will get accepted. Sigh! If I think of any other questions, I will definitely post, as you are so helpful! Thanks again!

Hello. I"m a student who attend college in P.A. as pre-nursing. I’m interested in transferring to TCNJ after I complete my freshmen year. Currently, I have a 3.8 GPA as an undergrad and plan to maintain the grade. My only concern with transferring to TCNJ would be whether my credits would transfer in. I’ve read the transfer website but still uneasy about my courses being tranferrable or not. It only gets evaluated after acceptance, however, any advice for possible transfer students like me?

Hi Zanica,

I’m pretty sure that in the nursing curriculum, the only course that is transferable from another institution is microbiology. So you would be starting as a freshman regardless of the courses that you have already taken. I know of many students that have transferred from another school, or another major at TCNJ, into our nursing program and begun as freshman; you certainly wouldn’t be the only one. Good luck! Hope that helps, feel free to ask more questions if you think of them!

Hi bmwmed19,
If that’s the case, do you recommend potential transfer student to take credits at bergen community college over the summer? If I take this path. I will be sending out both transcript from my current college and from Bergen. I’m hoping TCNJ will consider courses taken at BCC.
