Have any questions?

welcome gsrp to the Kenyon thread.:)

How is advising handled? Who is your freshman advisor, how are they assigned? Do you get a different advisor when you declare your major?

So is your son/daughter finally coming to kenyon SRMom3?

SRMom3 - My daughter applied ED 1 and has already received some information for incoming freshman. There is a very extensive questionnaire that asks every conceivable question (in multiple choice and essay format) which is used to match a student with his or her advisor. It asks things like how well do you feel prepared for college, what are your academic goals, what type of interaction you will expect to have with your advisor, what aspects of college experience you may need assistance with, your academic interests, are there any characteristics of an advisor (interests or background) that you wish to have, and asks for paragraphs to describe yourself, your goals, etc. I believe I read that the student may ask for a different advisor if they are not comfortable with the one assigned, and when you declare a major you will get an advisor in your department. I think that the advisor will contact the student by mail in the summer before orientation to introduce him or her self.

Has your daughter made her decision, or is she still trying to decide?

Still in the process, but we are going to talk this eveining and I thought this would be good to know. Doesn't help though. As with most things about these two schools. Though a different process than used by Grinnell they both seem good. At Grinnell your advisor is your frosh tutorial teacher so there is an element of self-selection going on. My son really liked his.

Here is the link to the description I had read about the advising
http://www.kenyon.edu/x686.xml

I sympathize with you about this drawn out decision process. My son did the same thing three years ago - he didn't couldn't decide until the last day. I'm sure she has a feeling in her heart which she will choose but she just doesn't want to commit yet (and close the door to the other option). At least that's how it was for my son.

Another thing about the advising, I corresponded with a parent of a Kenyon student about a question I had, and he told me that the advisors meet with the parents of their incoming advisees (as a group) before the parents leave on move-in day. He had actually emailed his D's advisor about a concern he had recently. It seems like a very personalized system.

After you fill out the very long questionnaire MotherOfTwo mentioned, they try to match your son/daughter/you with a professor in the area of your potential major, along with your requests for a male/female, etc.
When I first came to Kenyon I was interested in neuroscience, and I was paired with Karen Hicks, a molecular biology professor.
When you declare your major, you are required to switch advisors if you switch departments, and you have the option of switching if you do stay in the same department. I now have a different advisor, but I continue to visit Karen about once a week.
I can't speak for everyone, but faculty advisors are amazing. Both of my advisors, past and present will take me out of a walk or a cup of tea, they know everything about me (outside of the academic realm as well) and they never hesitate to help me in any way that they can.

Let me know if you have more specific questions about advising!

gsrp- The bookstore does not sell computers... so definitely bring one with you.

I elected to have a desktop, because I wanted the disc space, and I knew my comp would also be my stereo system and DVD player, and I wanted better quality sound and a larger screen. I've never felt the desire to tote a computer around with me, and I'm happy with my comp.
Most of my friends at Kenyon, and most students, have laptops, but I don't think they really have an advantage over desktop students. It's really your personal choice.
I will, however recommend that you get a flat screen moniter if you do opt for a desktop. If you have a big clunky moniter it will take up way more space than you'll want.

Thank you very much for your input! Whew...we were thinking of having our daughter purchase one there..good thing I asked or else it may have been a hassle!

Even though kc_lady says a laptop isn't an advantage, it is much more convenient to bring home for vacations (especially if flying, but even if driving) than a desktop.

Is Kenyon wireless, does it has Wi-Fi?

for the knowledge of all others who didn't get to see that thread, this girl had posted a link in the name of 'Kenyon College pictures' and instead had her own swimsuit and bareback pictures, in different postures at that link. Few other fellow ccers had also seen that thread.I think there were about 20 views!

What in the world are you talking about? I never posted such a link. I have no idea what you are talking about. I can assure you whoever posted that was not me. This isn't just my computer but it wasn't me.

I don't know how that got posted but those pictures are for my therapists eyes only. I'm recovering from an eating disorder and she has me take pictures so she can see if I am getting better or worse and to hopefully show me how bad off I look.

I will have to ask around the house to who posted it. I never even saw it. I'm sorry that it happened, but it wasn't me.

brokenchild: I also saw it, you made an entire new thread with a 'link to Kenyon College Pictures' from your overnight stay. The link was to your website (catfangz), was labeled Kenyon College Pictures, but the link actually took us to a picture of you, as silenceofthelamb said. It shocked me and makes me also very worried about you.

I didn't make it. Someone else at my house must have. I had friends in and out a lot this week. When did this happen? I am so comletely confused. The only link I've posted was to the Kenyon yahoo group and that was my friends link to my Kenyon pictures. I later made a link on my website but haven't posted that to anyone.

I'll ask everyone tomorrow at school. Like I said, I'm sorry it happened and that it offended people, but it wasn't me.

Back to the original question, what about wireless?

What cell phones work there? When my D visited she had no sevice from our AT&T/Cingular phones.

We switched to Verizon Wireless because AT&T did not have service in Gambier. The Verizon service is patchy depending on where you are around Kenyon.

Sprint did not work when our daughter visited.

Hey guys, sorry I'm taking so long to respond... end of the year crunch time!

No cell phones work inside buildings, but Verizon seems to be the best and most popular service. I am one of the rare people who doesn't have a cell phone so I can't tell you my personal experiences.

Most of Kenyon is wireless. The wireless can be patchy at times, but it is available in all dorms, the bookstore, Middle Ground, the library, and possibly other academic buildings... but I wouldn't know. Because I also don't have a laptop or wireless capabilities :)
