Verizon phones work in dorms with a range of reception from ok to bad depending on the day. They work fine outside, but only in digital mode.

Hi MolBioAce and/or kc_lady, can you tell us more about wellness housing? Do many students elect to live in wellness? I thought that I read somewhere that there might not be a wellness option for next year, is that true? Thanks in advance!

I think they both are having their semester finals, so they are not being able to reply back to our queries! Best of Luck guys!

This is our last week of class and finals are next week so we are going crazy as you guessed.

I think there will still be first year wellness next year, it may just be reduced in size. I know the uperclass wellness is down to one hall. I have good wellness friends who are juniors and sophs now, and many of them did chose to live in wellness before they came here. However, I think probably 50% were just randomly placed there. I have no solid facts, just going off of my freinds and general knowledge. Thanks for wishing us luck, could always use some extra :)

do you know exactly when kenyon will notify those on the waitlist this year? any idea from around what time last year?

I do not know that information. I was not in off the waitlist, nor do I know anyone who was. I mean, I'm sure I do, but we just don't talk about that once you are here. Still wishing you the best of luck!

Hey guys!
I just wanted to let you know that I'm back on CC! Finals week was crazy for me and totally exhausting, but now I'm home and rested and ready to answer more questions if you have them (and I'm sure you do).

OH! And I also wanted to let you guys know that as you get information on your Upper Class Counselor (UCC) and Faculty Advisor, I would be happy to (try) telling you a little bit about them if I know them. Perhaps MolBioAce would help out too... You should get that information in July (I think).

Welcome back kc_lady. Hope your finals went great. It will be awesome to learn about our UCC and FA beforehand, ^thats a good idea!:)

Question:
How is the Physics Department at Kenyon? Quality? Facilities? Summer Programs?

(This information is from a friend of mine... since I'm more of an arty girl...). The first thing is that the physics department is SMALL-- there are only a few majors each year, however the quality of the program is excellent. Enthusiastic, knowledgable professors, a relatively new building, some top of the line equipment that you wouldn't expect in a tiny, LAC department. The handful of physics majors are very bright and enthusiastic about physics. I don't know how much you know about the summer science program at Kenyon, but it is an opportunity for science scholars to do research alongside a professor for the summer... physics students are included.

Thanks for the info..kc_lady.

I had hard time finding something on the summer science programs in Kenyon's website. Do you know of any links where I can find some more information on the summer programs?

Thanks for all the help!

Summer science is pretty hard to get into--one of my friends is doing it. They basically accept like 10 people? or something like that? Anyway, there isn't a lot of info because it's such a selective program. And you won't really need to worry about it right away as an incoming freshmen.

blip -
This is from the Kenyon website. It says that 30 students per year, which is a pretty large number for a school Kenyon's size:

Summer Science Scholars

Each year, Kenyon students compete for grants that allow them to spend the summer in Gambier engaged in research with a faculty member. Summer Science Scholars--approximately 30 per year--collaborate with faculty members in biology, chemistry, mathematics, physics, psychology, and other scientific fields. Recent winners have explored such topics as carbon flux from wetland ecosystems and fixed points and the mathematics of the infinite. More...

This is the link to the page that the "more..." points to, which tells more about it, in detail:

Motheroftwo: Thanks for the link:)

ceruleanne: Everyone was talking about it so I just got interested. And its best to get motivated about something this substancial, quite ahead of the regular schedule.:p

As a first year student how much is it imperative for a freshman to own a laptop? What is the general price range?

Will Kenyon help us in anyway in acquiring the laptops( I mean in cheap prices )...because from my other frends who are going to the colleges/univs, I have come to know that many educational institutions have some deal with the computer manufacturers so that the students can buy the laptops in cheap prices?

Is that so in Kenyon as well?

It is very important to take many science classes your first year, and get to know different faculty members as well in order to get a choice research postion. This is especially true if you plan to do summer science after your first year. There is no reason not to plan ahead. Being well informed about everything in college will only help you in the end.

Most kids at Kenyon are pretty well off. So I don't know of any aid available for buying a laptop. However, a lot of people use computer labs and it's not exactly necessary--however, I'd say the majority of people do have them, if not for work, then just to be online all the time.

I really disagree with the statement that "most kids at Kenyon" are well off. I am not, and very few people I know are. While there are definitely some wealthy kids, and maybe even a higher percentage than at other LACs, "most" is a big hyperbole.

Kenyon does not offer aid for buying computers. I think it's very helpful to have a computer, but even a desktop is fine. I have a desktop and haven't ever wished I had a laptop instead. I have several friends with desktops. They all seem happy. Desktops are cheaper than laptops. It's hard to give a price range because these days there are so many special offers/add-ons, etc. I would go to a website like dell.com or apple.com and poke around.

Even though there are computer labs, I would recommend bringing your own computer. Many people prefer paper-writing in labs, and they are often packed. It's doable to get through Kenyon with no computer, but I think it would cause unneccessary stress to your experience.

I have heard that it is helpful to bring your own printer. Is that recommended?

Hmm you may disagree, but that doesn't change the fact that the atmosphere is of a rich, preppy boarding school. Everyone I've talked to is flying to a foreign country for the summer and not working. Sure, there ARE kids who are not doing that, but that's true in every upper class society.

Oh and I would not recommend bringing a printer. I only used mine once and then it jammed. I always went to a computer lab to get work done or to just get out of the room because sometimes people do work because there is just nothing else to do.
