I dont know if this has been asked already (tried vaguely and didn't find) but I was wondering abt the arrangements for bedding: stuff like mattresses and quilt and pillows. Should the students take these things with them/buy themselves or does the college provide bedding for the students? I am specially concerned abt the arrangement for international students.
thanks.

Mattresses (extra-long twins) are provided. All other bedding is not.

Chochu, since you're an international, you have a few options.
1) Buy your linens/pillows/etc in Nepal and carry/ship it all to Gambier.
2) Wait until you get to campus and then purchase them somewhere cheap like K-Mart or Walmart.
3) Or order them online and have them shipped directly to school.

I think Kenyon will send you information about shipping items to school pre-orientation. Or you can call/email the reslife office and ask them about it.
If for some reason they won't let you have an item shipped to you, I can probably make arrangements for it to be delivered to me, since I will be on campus early (before all of you guys). And then I can drop it off once you get to Gambier. PM me if you need help with all of this!

thanks loads for the information.

kc_lady,
Is there some place on campus that bikes can be stored where they will be out of the rain and snow? I know you don't need a bike to get around campus but I enjoy riding recreationally. Thanks!

Many bike racks on campus are in these little roofed structures to protect your bike from the elements. These are mostly in residential areas.
I know you plan to mostly ride recreationally, but if you wish to ride your bike to classes (academic areas, etc) you'll most likely have to leave it out under the sky.
And be sure to bring a bike lock. Kenyon is a very safe place, but people tend to "borrow" bikes if they're unlocked.

kc_lady,
How are the (men's) bathrooms set up? Are there individual shower spaces? Thanks!

As far as I know, men's bathroom are set up just like the girls-- with individual shower stalls. In some older dorms it's apparent that the showering area used to be one big communal shower, but since then curtains and barriers have been put up. No fear.

(and let me know if that's all you wanted to know... I was a little unclear)

thanks, kc_lady! thats all i was wondering about

When I visited Kenyon I heard lots of people talking about Kenster and I was wondering if there is any way to download it this summer or do I have to wait until I get there? Thanks!

You need to be on campus to get the program.

what is it?

It is a file-sharing program that lets you download music and videos (and other types of files) from other Kenyon students. Basically like Napster. But at Kenyon. Hence the name.

The program does not exist at Kenyon ;)

Yes, I don't know what KC_Lady is talking about...there are no file swapping programs at Kenyon :)

There are lots of bikes at Kenyon, but few people riding. There is a great bike path adjacent to the campus, http://home.earthlink.net/~bikeohio/kokosing.html

If you are a core road bike rider, area roads are great for training, but a little hilly for the occasional rec rider. Mtn bike riders will need a car to get to decent trails.

thanks for the info ExOH, was seeking that.......

hi kc_lady,
These are kind of mundane questions, but we are really getting down to the nitty gritty of dorm shopping now! My D will be in Lewis. Do you know if it is permitted to screw or nail things to the wall, like hooks, etc. or must everything be done with adhesives? Also, for an area rug, would 5 x 8 feet be a good size? We saw some this size that were nice and inexpensive. Thanks, Mother of Two

One more thing - we just received an advertisement to rent a 4.3 cubic foot refrigerator and a small microwave for $189 per year. I looked on the Wal-mart website (just as an example - I'm sure they can be purchased in many other places too) and found that they cost less than this new. Even if you have to pay for summer storage, renting does not seem like a good deal.

Screws and nails are not permitted-- everything must be adhesive based. You can buy adhesive hooks that work really well at places like Walmart. My freshman year I brought a ton of hooks in different sizes, and ended up using them all by the end of the year. I stuck a bunch inside my closet for hanging my bathrobe, coats, etc more easily.

Renting is definitely more expensive than buying and storing refrigerators/microwaves. I got a decent microwave at Walmart for less than 30 dollars, and inherited a mini-fridge from my brother. There are tons of used mini-fridges floating around, as most people have no use for them after college. Definitely ask around if you know college grads, etc. There is no need for bells and whistles on small appliances when you'll just be making ramen noodles and hot chocolate.

If you plan on buying your appliances at the Mount Vernon Walmart/Kmart, do so EARLY! Many people have this plan, and although they try to stock as many as they can, they often run out...

Thanks a lot, kc_lady. Since we will be driving, we can buy these items at home.
