My son is waitlisted and Oxy was very high on his list. There seems to be some confusion about how to jump from list to admitted student. Has anyone on this forum had experience with this and if so, what factors do you think helped in the process?
Thanks...

From Occidental College Guide @ enotes.com

Applicants Place on Waiting List:

724
Applicants Accepted from Waiting List:

280
Applicants Enrolled from Waiting List:

19

So from this statistics, in the year 2008, they admitted 32% of those on the waiting list of those 32% only 19 people accepted the offer. Things that will effect chances off the waiting list will be, interests in the school, what you’ve done since then, if grades are good and the high school runs on a quarterly system then send in 3rd quarter grades.

But I’d say if possible visit the school, send a letter of why you want to go to Occidental and why it’s your #1, also why you would fit in, and lastly send in what you’ve done since then. Any supplemental material helps, just don’t overload them with a specific thing (e.g. 10 more recommendation letters)

Last year they didn’t take anyone off the waitlist because they accepted more students than they thought would enroll (2013 was their largest class). I was wait listed but never got in, nor did anyone else. Could be different this year though. They called it the “obama bump.”

tomph, your comments on incorrect

the 280 figure is the amount of students that were offerred to be put on the waitlist and decided to stay on it.

I’ve just received my Oxy Waitlist Decision. Unfortunately, I didn’t get in and from their email I understand that they couldn’t take people from the waiting list.

Sorry! Did they email you or did you get a letter as well?
Thanks

I am an international student and I got an email. They said that the letters will arrive soon.
