have anyone erolled by minneapolis college of art and design???

I really love the work at MCAD's website.
Do anyone here know about it?
It seems that MCAD doesn't have very good rank.

I haven’t been there but my kid visited, liked it’s low key down to earth-ness, good facility, great resources near by (he said Walker is better than MoMA)
this mom poster named redbug’s D just started. you might find her posts in “after the launch” and "what to bring? " threads. her D had other choices but MCAD was the best fit. she can tell you more if she pops in.
rank is, just that, rank of whoever ranking it however in their own agenda, especially UG artschools.
best go see yourself if you can.

Hi Echo, yes my D just started this fall as an illustration major. She really loves the school (in her words, “AMAZING!”, and we were impressed by the fact that Minneapolis LOVES their art and spends $$ on art and culture items. We felt it bode well for employment, internships, etc. School has about 760 students, and is right next to one of Minneapolis’ 2 major art museums which is used for teaching as well. She says faculty is very approachable. AS a matter of fact, on our first visit there, we ran into a class being taught and she was able to talk to the prof one on one. There are apartments vs dorms, which she shares with 3 other students, 2 of whom are international students. She is fitting in well, and has already made lots of friends, many of whom are international (China, Mexico, Turkey, Israel) students. There’s a thing called “Midwest Nice”, and it certainly is evident there. No meal plan, but there is a cafeteria and an art store on the campus as well.

My D’s other choices were KCAI (her 2nd choice), & New Hampshire Institute of Art with merit aid for all. She only officially applied to 3 schools, but her portfolio was also accepted at SAIC, Memphis, Cornish, and a few others. As for rank, I’m not sure how they do that - as her art teacher always said “Not every school is right for you, and you’re not right for every school”. I believe it’s all about fit.

Thx so much!!!
But some more questions remains.
The first one is how is the weather as MCAD?I heard it quite cold at winter.
Another one is that do you think minneapolis have a good evironment for career?Since the chances there maybe not as much as that in NYC or LA.
Do you D receive fin aid there?
The last question is that why don’t you D apply to the famous RISD,MICA and so on?

I’ve checked KCAI, it’s so cute!!! I guess I have quite a similiar taste as your D. But I am applying for MFA. I do not think KCAI offer the MFA degree, do they?

No, KCAI does not have a MFA program. D is hanging out mostly with the international (China, Israel) MFA students, so I can ask her what they think of the MFA classes. Are you an international student? Yes Minneapolis is VERY cold in the winter, with much snow. The upside is that both classroom buildings are connected by a walkway, and the dorms are literally across the lawn. Downtown buildings in Minneapolis are also connected by what they call the skyway system, which is walkways above the streets. As far as career-wise, while NY and LA may be better for jobs, Minneapolis is very into their arts and culture and internships are available, like Target. We did the usual college tours, and did not get to see RISD and MICA. She felt that some of those “famous” schools were cut-throat and the kids that went there were all about “look at me, I’m so good” and really had no interest in seeing them. We did not see any NY or Calif schools (no time, too far). We saw SAIC and while the facilities were OK, she didn’t like SAIC’s pass-fail, forge your own path program. D. got financial aid at MCAD, KCAI and NHIA, but felt totally at home at MCAD with KCAI a close second. For her it was the perfect fit.

What discipline do you want to get your MFA in?

Thx so much!I come from China. If your D can offer me some information that would be soooooo nice!!

My BFA is in graphic design, and I want a MFA in either graphic design or illustration. Someone has also recommended interactive design for me, but I am afraid it’s to technological and will do more coding than drawing. My favourite direction is pattern design, do you have any idea about it?

Redbug’s D: This may be a tad late, but I can answer questions about the MFA program if you’d like, PM my mom if you haven’t already and I’ll try to answer questions the best I can :)
