I will be a Junior this fall. I think I screwed up badly Sophomore Year. My GPA is horrible: 3.63 W, 3.15 UW.

My Sophomore Year Schedule was as followed:
AP World History B
Pre AP English B/A
AP French B/B
AP Human Geography C/A
Team Sports B
Algebra 2 Honors B/C
Chemistry Honors B/B
Literature and The Arts (Honors) B

I really want to go to harvard for various reasons. Junior Year I plan to take 6 AP Classes. I think I can handle them and get As if I motivate myself. Hopefully they will boost my gpa. My standardized tests and extracurriculars will be great though. I'm only worried about my GPA.

PS: Can any one estimate what my GPA can be by the end of junior year.

Nne718, My freshman year was sorta similar but I improved a little. I think that my freshman year uw gpa was higher than my sophomore but my weighted gpa was higher (slightly) this year.

Learninginprog, that post was just a prediction to see if it would be enough to be considered in ivy leagues. I am a junior as of now and just found out about my sophomore grades. I think my final exams last year changed my As into Bs. Sorry for the confusion.

Yeah, two years of grades like that isn’t going to look very good. It would only be excused if you have a legitimate reason for why your grades are low (illness, family issue, etc.). Not saying that you shouldn’t apply, but your chances don’t look too great at the moment. Try to get all As next year.

To be honest, its going to be tough sledding to get into Harvard. Based on what you have told us at any rate. Even if you maintain straight A’s first junior+ senior year, it may not be able to overcome the low grades you got earlier. Its a lot harder to go up than it is to go down

Well Nne718, what if I could pull of an unweighted 3.75 and a weighted 4.45 by the end of junior year. Don’t the GPAs matter more than the individual grades?

They look at both Ferra. Also, it is going to be impossible to get a 3.75 UW from a 3.15 even if you get straight A’s.

I’m assuming here that you also had 8 classes in freshman and will take 8 in junior. I calculated that you would get about a 3.4333 UW GPA by end of next year with the straight A’s. Tell me more info for a better calculation

Pinball360, Your probably right that It will be impossible to get my GPA from a 3.15 to a 3.7 but I think I could boost it up by a bit. Here is my Junior Schedule:
AP English
AP US History
AP Statistics
AP Physics
Creative Writing
Journalism I (1/2 Credit)
Literature and The Arts II (Honors–1/2 Credit)
AP Psychology
(My school has a mandatory of 7 credits a year)

Online Courses:
Pre Calculus Honors
AP Art History

I know your thinking that this is an impossible workload but I am determined to do the best I can this year. I honestly never had any problems with APs but Honors classes seemed to have more work for some reason. I was wondering if you could calculate my GPA. I don’t know how to incorporate my Online Courses in to my GPA calculations. I’ve already started the online courses and they seem fairly easy.

You have three, math-based classes on your schedule (stats, pre-calculus and physics B). As a teacher who handles online classes at my high school, I can tell you that taking math online if it is not your strength is very, very difficult.

You say that you have “various reasons” for your interest in Harvard.
If you can elaborate on those reasons, you might get useful suggestions for other schools to consider that would also meet your criteria.

I might add this. The rigor of taking those AP’s is hard. This is from someone who took 16 AP’s throughout highschool (took 8 senior year and 5 jr year). The fact is that your record isnt all that stellar. B/C’s in Chem suggests that AP Physics could be very hard for you. Same with Statistics though it is true some people are better at certains kinds of math than others. A B in Literature and the Arts could mean you may not be ready yet to get an A in AP english Language. As much as I can tell you want Harvard, sometimes it is best to be realistic and not struggle in your JR year, which is your most important year

First of all, your actions are inconsiderate. When you post fake statistics (“chance an african american”) and ask people to spend their time evaluating them, it is just wrong. The only exception I would have to this is if you were to state this up front.

Second, you grades are low. Period. And a two year track record of these stats is not going to help. It does not speak for for either you academic ability, efforts, or both. Top ranked schools are not going to like that.

Third, you can’t calculate a GPA using your artificial junior year grades. (You asked CCers to give you an estimate) That is not difficult math.

Forth, not getting into Harvard could be perfect. Getting into a school where you may struggle for four years it not always the best thing no matter how much you “love it”.

Lastly, if you were to actually fully describe the real you, with your real stats and activities, CCers might be able to give you some real feedback.
