<p>I know a lot of colleges recommend and require that you take 4 years of a foreign language, especially Top Schools. When I was in 8th Grade (Middle School) I took French I at my local High School. Anyways I kept taking French Classes until I completed AP French Language my Sophomore Year. I was the only Sophomore taking it at the time and I skipped 2 French Courses because the curriculum was shortened (horrible budget cuts at school...). I'm not even a native speaker so it was very difficult. Anyways I passed AP French with a B+ and scored a 4 on the exam. My question is have I completed the required amount of language classes. I'm not sure I have since I took a class while in middle school and skipped 2 classes? Do I need to take more language courses?</p>
<p>Depends. Some colleges explicitly recommend at least 2 high school years of a foreign language, whereas many others will not care if you have the AP credit. In your case, I wouldn’t be too worried. They can’t really expect your school to have French classes higher than the AP level (although several do), and taking another language would be asking for too much.</p>

<p>If the college wants 4 years then they want 4 years of classes. Some colleges have exams that let you bypass the foreign language requirement.</p>
<p>OP, I think so because i will be taking AP Chinese next year as a sophomore. So what am I supposed to do, take another two years of a diff language? Nope, I asked my counselor, and she said that upon completing AP Chinese it will be considered 5 years of a language. So, like-wise, after this year when I was finished with Chinese 4 Honors, I had completed 4 years of language.</p>
<p>The level is what matters because they want to see the proficiency. I’ve confirmed this with my counselor, if you take Spanish 4 that counts as 4 years of Spanish.</p>

<p>They’re looking for proficiency in a language. If you made a 4 on the AP exam, that is sufficient. If you want to continue with French ever in your life though, I highly recommend taking some French college courses.</p>
