Have I torpedoed my chance at getting into UC Berkeley's Haas?

I recently just earned a B in Financial Accounting. (Hey! It was difficult!)

I know that financial accounting is not a business prerequisite to be accepted into Haas, but I took it because I'm aiming for UCI as well.

I'm really not that bad of a student I swear!

Besides that nasty B that will now plague my transcript...

I have A's in everything else, all my pre-reqs and breadth requirements.
I work for my college as a statistics tutor.
I also work at a retail store.
I have a business (law) internship this fall.
I am in the honors program.
I've joined all the honors societies possible at my school as well as numerous other clubs.
Hundreds of community service hours.
Does UC Berkeley really still look at your SAT/ACT score? Because I didn't fare too well on those.

Orrr. Should I just aim for political science because I've doomed myself. And what else should I add to my to-do list to make myself more... attractive to my love, Haas? :)

Be as brutal as you want.

One B will not doom your chances are Berkeley.

You should of posted this in the UC transfer section since it’s more specific and will generate more traffic there.

I am a Haas student. Sorry to say but your chances are slim with this B, especially since it is a class that is required to be taken for all Haas transfers when they are admitted into Haas.

Some questions for you: Did you finish all your prereqs? How is a law internship (I’m assuming you are at an attorney’s office) related to business? Do you have any leadership positions in your clubs? Remember, it’s quality over quantity.

You do not have to worry about them looking at your SAT score.

I’m also a Haas student and I say don’t sweat it. You already got the B, just move on and keep working hard.

I got accepted with absolutely zero leadership positions, was only part of the PTK honors thing at school as a regular member, and had very little as far as EC’s go. I also only had one B while I was attending CC and that was in Calc 2.

If you put in the time to make sure you have all pre-reqs fulfilled and write some rock solid essays to get in then you should be fine.

I think over anything else, what got me in was my essays. I spent 2 weeks straight writing those and had a number of different people that were at or above my intellectual level read them. If you display that you can handle the academic rigor and are a good “fit” for the school’s principles and values (do your research) then your golden (or rather a golden bear =D ).

Good luck.

OMG THE HUMANITY!!! :O

You should go apply to CSU East Bay. You’ve now tarnished your chances at any UC.

PS: Your mentality? When you get a new car will you send it to the dump for getting a scratch?

If you’re this concerned, I’m wondering how many units you have. A B on a 3-4 unit class will not drastically hurt your GPA if you’ve got 80+ units (which is pretty standard for a UCB transfer). [3.95 vs a 4.0 if the other 76 units are straight As]

Nah, you’re going to Haas. Unless you mail in a personal statement with a turd taped on it.

MitchAPalooza: Thanks. I wasn’t sure where to post this topic. Still a relatively new member.

Investment: After reading this post, I felt like I was SOL. Which I probably am. Financial accounting is a business class whether or not it is a pre-req for Haas. I will be finished with all my pre-reqs by the end of Spring 2011. The law internship seems a bit odd, but I want to be a lawyer (business concentrated). I don’t have any leadership positions as of yet in any of the clubs, but will be applying this semester. Thanks for being honest.

gsilas2007: Your post very much contradicted Investment’s post and made me feel better. But, of course you may just be that rare exception because I’ve known many people where they had 4.0s, excellent extracurriculars (leadership positions), finished all pre-reqs, excellent essays etc… the whole she-bang and got rejected. Thanks for your input though, I guess that B alone won’t get me rejected if I keep working hard and make sure I have all my pre-reqs fulfilled and such.

wwlink: Your post made me laugh. I tend to be overly worried about everything and anything. Just who I am. I will have about 90 units total when I transfer so… I guess I should be fine. Thanks for your input and humoring me.

Thanks you guys!

I have been looking at the site, finding all information possible for Haas, which I am also applying.

To be honest, you are in a far better position than I am. First, I don’t know what is your school pre-requiste, in my school, Pasadena City College, we don’t have accounting as one. But even that, I don’t know you ever heard of such a class called ESL, which stand for, English as a Second Language Program?

I had came here with a terrible foundation, but that was where I started, and if you looked at my transcript, the first one, a big fat “B”, on ESL 33A, which is the first English class I took. Yet I am taking English all the way to 1C, which is not required, but just for the sake, first I love the intensity, second to demonstrate what I am capable of.

Therefore, of EVERY semester I have an English class (almost like high school lol), ESL 33A, 33B, English 1A, English 1B, and this coming semester 1C, and at last, the writing one.

Let me also add, you are honored to have all those volunteer hours, work experience, etc. For all of my work for the last 2 years, and this coming the 3rd year, dedicated to the school, the Student Government, and Independent research; thus, you sure will have a fuller resume.

Hey, hope we both get in.

@diffachen: ESL classes are not transferable anyways so getting a “Big fat B” doesn’t hurt you at all in that class. Just do well in your English 1A, 1B and 1C classes

I understand you’re trying to be competitive, but I think you’re being a little too hard on yourself. One B doesn’t make you a lousy student. There’s ALWAYS a 4.0 who got rejected from Haas around here. I think you still have a solid chance :)
