have in state students been accepted with 3.6 unweighted gpa??

if yes, what were your test scores and weighted gpa?

bump

In our school pool of ~100 acceptances with an average 3.9 u/w I see 3 between 3.5 and 3.6. SAT ~1400

The vast majority are 3.8 - 4.0

2 weighted GPAs were ~4.45
Vast majority at or above 4.7

I have to say, I find those statistics very discouraging. We hear so much about the holistic application review, that there’s no absolute/cutoff criteria, etc., but the numbers sure make it look like those statements aren’t necessarily true.

People will say I’m wrong but from 200 data points it’s pretty clear that the holistic element applies to applicants on tje bubble. 20-25%

In-state high-performing charter. Not crazy-high. We get ~1 Ivy/year

If you go to collegedata.com you can find the stats of lots of self-reported applicants. For UNC last year, there were 4-5 in-state applicants with 3.64 UW or below that reported being accepted out of 24 results. Lowest SAT of those was 1160, highest was 1530.

Correct me if I’m wrong, but won’t weighted GPA play a major role in whether or not a student is accepted at an instate UW of 3.6?

Naviance is a much better tool for in-state schools, IMO. It specifically looks at the profile of the students accepted from your school.

I would hope weighted GPA means something. If they were really considering the rigor of the classes the applicant took, they would have to. Otherwise everyone would just take the easiest classes to bump up their UW

Actually, weighted GPA means everything way more than unweighted if you have weighted GPA available at your school. I got accepted with a 3.58 UW GPA but my weighted GPA was a 4.46 and yup, I also got a 1080 SAT score but I improved as I continued high school. I am currently a freshmen at Carolina.

@xyxyxx How did it go? D was deferred- which effectively means declined. Surprised though not shocked. At least she got in to State. Waiting for Barnard in March.

@byadg123 D was rejected. Deferred at State. We are not surprised about UNC, a bit surprised about State. I have ot say, I was very surprised your D was deferred. Very. I’ll keep watching for your updates!

@xyxyxx Sorry about your D. Mine had a very strong application with one hole - no real leadership positions in ECs. Lots of legitimate volunteer hours, formed an in-school graphic design firm with her sister, maxed-out course load, solid essays, great letters (including from her principal who doesn’t do many). She doesn’t want to write a show-me-the-love letter though she may change her mind.

She has the honor of having the best numbers ever not accepted from our HS! (Like Seinfeld says about the Olympic Silver medalist, “of all of the losers, you’re the best!”)

So what’s your D’s new 1st choice? I seem to recall APP. Is that right?

@byadg123 Love your Seinfeld reference! What a honor.

D’s 1st choice has been Dickinson from the beginning, but she is much more likely to end up closer to home (likely not enough merit, even at the maximums I’ve heard reported). She liked APP and has been accepted. She also likes Roanoke College, had been accepted with nice merit and is participating in a scholarship competition this week. Ursinus is another option, also with nice merit.

I recall that your other D is applying RD to UNC and if I remember right, both were looking at State and APP, as well. Is that right? Glad your D1 is in at State!

Both have been accepted to App but neither wants to go. D2 applied RD to UNC and NCState. I hadn’t been worried about NCState but now that D1 was deferred from UNC I’m nervous for her. I hope she doesn’t end up at her safety.

D2 has been accepted to Marist and praying for Syracuse. It will all be about the financial aid.

D1 got stingy aid from Fordham and is praying for Barnard.

Good luck with Dickinson aid! Keep in touch.
