so im a freshman in college and I feel so lost and confused because I can’t decide what to major in. I finished my gen ads in high school and I started undeclared, switched to political science, then pre nursing. and now I’m taking the nursing pre reqs and I absolutely hate it because science is not my best subject. But the only reason I did nursing is because I knew I would find a job after graduation. I love political science but my friends and family said that it was useless pursuing it. (especially my family because they don’t want to see me doing any liberal arts degree). I go through the major catalog at least twenty times a day trying to pick a major that interests me but I can’t because I feel like its too late to begin a new major. (freshman year is basically over). any advice would be much appreciated
You accidentally posted in the Musical Theater forum. You should re-post in the general College Majors forum. Good luck!
It seems as if you have an idea of what you like, and you need to kick your butt into gear and switch. It’s never too late to pursue your passion (ha, what a line). Really though, people switch their majors all of the time, probably even junior year sometimes, so you’re fine as a freshman. If you want to be super smart about it then see if there’s a (political science?) major that lines up with any classes you’ve already taken.
Your family must not want you to get a liberal arts degree because they think you’ll be better off with a job in the STEM field, but take it from someone with a parent who is unhappy with their career as a doctor: don’t do it for the money. Clearly you need to change your major, so my advice (after all of that) is to look into the political science options (as I’m sure you’ve done 100 times). If you’re worried about your family, maybe take a technical route like political analyst or something similar (at least tell them that’s your plan and figure out the real answer over the next few years). Remember that your major doesn’t define your future career, no matter what you do your future is going to adopt information from different fields.
Also, maybe the pressure you were feeling was in your own mind, and what you were really detecting was their strong need for you to succeed. Try not to harbor any sour feelings about the pressure, your family just wants what’s best for you
I hope that was helpful!
Maybe it was a type of Freudian slip that you posted in the Musical Theater Major forum.
