Have questions? Ask an Andover Freshmen!!

Hey swimdude006,
Do you think it would hurt your your chances to apply for FA and not need it? Like, if your maybe high middle class? I know my parents can pay for PA but i know it would take a huge chunk of their money and would have to work more hours.
Do you know anybody at PA who is from really far and having trouble adjusting? Or are most people easily making friends? How bad is the homesickness?
Do you think you have a shot at PA if you dont have any amazing hooks? I mean if you make good grades, have extracurriculars, just nothing stellar that really sets you apart?
Do you think having an interview over skype or with alum would hurt your chances? i would like to have an in person but i live far it would kinda diffcult.
LAST THING I SWEAR(: does it snow?? and get really cold?? im from the south where it doesnt get any snow or basically get cold.(:
sorry for bombarding you with questions!!!

PA’s need-blind. I’d advise you to ask for FA even if you might not need it; they’ll make the decision and it wouldn’t hurt to keep that option open.
Most people at least found some friends pretty easily. Homesickness is a given, but I haven’t heard of it being too bad in any cases.
Interview over Skype or an alum definitely doesn’t hurt your chances. I got in on an alum interview. I didn’t have any amazing hooks, either. However, it tends to depend upon what the admission officers are feeling like and how the rest of the applicants look.
Yes, it snows. Yes, it gets cold. This year was just really mild.

We have to provide our own toiletries correct? Does the school have a small school store to buy such things?

13 more days till my letter comes!

Probably gonna be a rejection… Lol

Dunno if there is a place on campus or not; but there is a CVS drugstore within walking distance of Andover, a long with a lot of other stores (e.g. The Andover bookstore, clothing stores, Sweet Mimi’s chocolate/candy store), etc…

I have heard that Andover is more liberal than Exeter. In what ways are people referring to? Aside from unlimited internet.

Shinlikemystar: yes you do have to provide your own. What i did was go to costco and buy a huge vat of conditioner, shampoo, and bodywash, all of ehich have lasted me the year, and a few sticks of deoderant, razors, towels, toothpaste, etc. buying in bulk at the beginning of the year was a great idea on my parent’s part. They also sell general stuff in the den (snack bar right under commons) like shampoo, conditioner, deoderant, etc.

Perrier2468: i honestly don’t have the best undertanding of ehat liberal really is, let alone a comparrison to exeter (didn’t know it existed until revisit day!). If my definition of liberal is correct (open minded, love change/diversity in ideas), then yes andover is very liberal. There is an array of clubs from womans rights, to atheism, gay straight alliance, and political clubs. Im sorry if im not of much help. I don’t pay much attention to these things (culture of the school). I just accept what’s around me and try and compare it to my previous education and by all means is it a whole new step!

Haha I’ve caught swimdude at a time when he’s on XD

Well, uh, my question is…

Do the teacher’s hate overachievers or slackers more? And are there any teacher’s pets/favoritism by teachers?

And are they generally just pretty chill?

Collegecookie, that’s a good question!

And swimdude, do you live out of state? If so did your parents fed ex you all of those things or did you carry it with you to the airport as a checked in bag?

CollegeCookie: Teachers seem to be indifferent when it comes to kids at PA, although I’ve been told some aren’t the best (I wouldn’t know, I love my teachers!). And even if the students are under/overachievers, they don’t express that during class. It’s only evident that they are under/overachievers when they’re outside of class doing how, fooling around, etc. And yes there are teachers pets, but they don’t get any extra points. And yes, I consider this school pretty chill, but the weekdays are pretty stressful (workload more or less).

shinelikemystar:
I live out of state (in new england, but still like a 4 hour drive), but no my parents did not fed ex any of my things when I got here (didn’t know if the room was going to be big/small!). I just brought the necessities (school supplies, bedding, printer, collapsable shelf, trash bin, clothes, shower stuff, sports equipment). Throughout the year, I add items to my room (going/coming back from break, parents weekend, whenever my parents come up-once a term-, etc.). A lot of my friends who live in the east just had a LONG roadtrip with a uhaul truck to have one last family trip before school. I know my journey was tough to get up here because I had two kid’s stuff, plus 6 people in one car and no storage attachment!

Swimdude006- What is included in the fedex package? Any goodies?

perrier2468: Sorry to break it to you, but the package had no goodies :(. There were however, very warm and welcoming letters (hand written in most cases) that congradulated me on my success in being accepted at PA. I was shocked when I got the package (parents pulled a trick on my brother and I saying that we didn’t get in, but then my acceptance letter was in the bathroom just when I went to do my buisness lol!) and it was one of the happiest moments of my life! There was a certificate of acceptance, a handwritten letter from your interviewer, a handwritten letter from the swim coach, tuition info, revisit info, info guides, course of study, fun facts, and an admission letter.

Please tell me Andover has accessible microwaves? I need to wax my eyebrows on weekends ahah

I think getting an acceptance and handwritten letters congratulating it is all the goodies I would need. Acceptance>material.

shinelikemystar: yes ther are microwaves that are accessible throughout the day!

bklai8: exactlyyyyy :D

Do people at Andover have the chance to shadow doctors if they wish to become a heart surgeon? Do they have a chance to shadow for any career?

swimdude just posted on another thread that he has exams/finals so he wont be back for a while.

so swimdude you can answer this when youre done with finals, but how often do you do finals? 3 times a year? do you guys run on trimesters?

Hey shinelikemystar, I’m a current student at PA, and yes, we run on trimesters and have finals at the end of each term.

Ohhhh god nooo. Ew finals are terrible… At least at my school.

How are they at PA?

Some finals are tough…but I think a lot depends on both what subjects you’re taking as well as the teacher. Although many finals are the same throughout the entire department, so the teacher does not matter.
