Have questions? Ask an Andover Freshmen!!

So when is the approximate time I should be expecting my placement tests to arrive?

I got my placement test sometime in april (can’t really remember). One suggestion though, do these tests HONESTLY, which means no calculators, google translator, help from parents, a piano for the music section, etc. These are to place you into the courses that are most appropriate for you. If you feel like your placement is too hard/easy, then at the beginning of the year you can request to drop down a level to fit your needs.

when do you think you should you start the application process for next year?

If you’ve already got your schools down that you would potentially want to apply to, do your initial application and interviews in september/october. start getting reccomendations in mid/late november, and then start cranking essays during december/january. I didn’t do this, and applied in 5 days (NOT FUN!), but this would generally be the best idea.

Do people usually get what they asked for on their Student Housing Information Forms?
What do you do during holidays when you’re not off school (e.g., for Valentine’s Day, St. Patrick’s Day, Halloween)?

WorriedOne1000: Most of the time, you get what you want on the housing forms. If you request a specific dorm, you will probs get it. As for those types of holidays, we usually carry on with typical classes, and have a special food menu, and maybe some special events in the afternoon. If on a weekend, there might be a dance themed after the holiday.

So I’ve completed my math placement test, when do I find out what level of math I was placed in? Soon? Or not until fall?

You won’t find out any of your courses till the sunday before school starts when you look over your schedule with your adviser

Swimdude… How competitive are JV2/JV3 teams? Is there room for beginners? Also, do you know if many juniors make varsity girls basketball?

I don’t think there are JV3 teams and most JV2 teams don’t cut people so there’s really a place for everybody. On teams where there’s only JV and Varsity teams (swimming, waterpolo, hockey, tennis, etc.) they will make cuts. As for varisty girls basketball, I don’t think any freshman this year made varsity (none in guys, and I’m not sure about girls). The JV program, however, is very competitive and will prepare you for varsity tryouts the following year. Keep in mind that there are options like yoga, dance, and instructional sports as well!

I have an odd question, so you know how there’s that kind of formation of these pine(?) trees near the gyms at PA? And there’s that driveway behind it that buses from other schools pull into for games? I’ve driven past it so much and i finally looked at it from google maps, but it doesn’t appear to be much of anything. Anyone know what it symbolizes/what purpose it serves? Thanks

Not really symbolic. just there lol

It’s just sort of a weird thing to have you know? From google maps you can see that all the trees are lined up perfectly, in sort of rectangles that are crossing, idk, but its odd.

hi! so my school sort of frowns upon people applying to bs and private schools so all my teachers have been SUPER hesitant about writing recommendations, so I’m worried they’ll be bad and i’m scared about asking some of them. do you think it’ll hurt my chances?

it’s been a while for this thread lol! I wouldn’t worry. Just explain to your teachers that boarding school presents a unique high school experience and that you want to grasp that opportunity at the most ideal time in your life, which is now, and that their reccomendations will help with that. Note that teachers don’t have to write reccommendations, so make sure to be polite.

Hey, I’m just wondering about student/dorm life. For example, is there some free time for people to just hang out together? And what are the policies on cell phones/internet? That kind of stuff. Are you good friends with everyone from your dorm? Really anything on student life is great. Thanks!

Hello! I was wondering about how to contact an alumni for your interview; I just looked on the PA website and man, is the alumni list loooooong for my state! What do I do? I can’t possibly pick one from that list-I know next to nothing about the people in that list! :-S

Hi swimdude006,
I’m in 7th grade right now.(12 years old) I want to start attending andover from 9th grade.
A few questions.

 1. Is the SSAT harder than the practice tests are?
 2. How many reports do you have to hand in? (e.g from 6th grade, etc.)
 3. Do you have to have something unique about you?
 4. How is life in Andover in general? (sorry if sm1 has asked u that already)

Thxxx alot

1) yes, they are. Try looking up past SSATs online and completing those. You honestly don’t need to stress BS right now…you’re like 12 years old…

2) I have no clue. I handed in the school forms to my 8th grade councilor and they did the rest. again, don’t worry about past grades. Schools will judge who you are currently, and not what you did in the past (in terms of grades).

3) not really…asian kid from white town who swam, wrote for a school newspaper, sang, and played cello. Pretty normal if you ask me

4) It’s pretty great. Lots of academic pressure but very rewarding. Good dorm bonding. Independence building. The works

If you have any more questions, feel free to PM!

@swimdude:I just registered 15 minutes ago, posted the following question ( my first one on CC), nobody answered yet. Maybe you could kindly help:
I know the average SSAT scores for Andover acceptance is 93% in 2012. Among the students around you, do you see most of them are above 90’s? or it is a mixed group with high 90’s and 80’s ?
thank you so much for your time
