Have questions? I'm open to answering them!

@chemistrywarrior To be honest I haven’t spent much time in Sixth so I can’t really give you an accurate idea of what it’s like. All I know is it’s the smallest and newest college. I recommend you ask some Sixth students at Triton Day.

Once again, though, I’d like to emphasize that the college you’re admitted to only really matters because of GE’s and location.

Triton Day and the housing app are all you need to worry about! No, as long as you SIR to the college of your choice by the deadline you’ll be fine! Don’t feel pressured to SIR sooner than you have to. You won’t get any priorities from doing so.

What type of housing would you guys recommend?

@justmyview
hi, i’m a senior in high school and got accepted to UCSD’s Warren College. i’m from Connecticut so i don’t have the opportunity to visit UCSD and i’m a little out of my element.

i don’t know for certain if Warren is the right/wrong choice for me but from my research (i looked up pictures of Warren, read a few blogs from UCSD students, went on the virtual UCSD tour, and called admissions and got in touch with a person who was in Muir and explained to me each college), i think i’d like it. nonetheless, i’m still a little nervous about going so far away in a college that i haven’t really ‘visited’.

so here are a few questions (it’s a lot but i hope you don’t mind)…

 1. how hard would it be to switch out of Warren if it isn’t the right fit for me?
 2. how long are the breaks ? i know that it goes by trimesters but i’d like to get an idea on how many days we get off for christmas/thanksgiving to see if i can visit home
 3. is having a car essential? or even a bike? or is there a campus bus and how much would it cost?
 4. what should an out-of-state person like me bring?
 5. is Warren far away from the main buildings/center of the campus?
 6. i’m thinking about majoring in something in the medical field; would being in Warren put me far away from my classes?
 7. how far away is the beach? the virtual tour said a 15 minute walk but does that apply to Warren or anywhere on campus?
 8. would i be able to meet other students from other colleges? or would being in Warren restrict me?
 9. how is Warren compared to the other colleges?
 10. how is the security? my mom is already worried about me going so far…
 11. what is the average class size?
 12. what is the residence like?
 13. would it be hard to request a change in roommate?
 14. are the dorms co-ed?
 15. do they offer chinese classes?
 16. where should i go if i want to get involved in clubs and student activities?
 17. i know it’s early but how’s the study abroad program?
 18. is it hard to get a job in/around campus? (i signed up for work study)
 19. what is Sun God?

it’s a lot of questions but even a few imputes/advice would be great! and they don’t have to be related to any of the questions at all
anyway, i appreciate all the help i get!

1) already answered on another thread (see changing colleges on main page)
2) google ucsd academic calendar. and we call them quarters, not trimesters.
3) no, no, yes, free with a student ID. google ucsd shuttle service.
4) nothing different than an in-state student. but ditch your parka and snow boots.
5) not as far as ERC. google ucsd walking campus map - has estimated walking time
6) no, and there’s the campus loop shuttle. note that there’s no strict premed major.
7) black’s beach is the closest by walking. 15 minutes from muir.
8) um, yeah. ONLY your writing classes are restricted by college. nothing else.
9) it’s fine. they’re all fine.
10) a lot safer than new haven. i had no problems crossing campus by myself at 4am. send your mom the link to the guardian’s lights and sirens (crime report) if she’s worried
11) it depends. ranges from a dozen to 400. the schedule of classes (yes, googleable) tells you the class capacity.
12) never lived there, but my friends didn’t complain
13) yes unless there are some serious allegations being brought up
14) no (each suite/apt is single-sex) while floors are coed. but you don’t have to share bathroom with the other gender. (nothing’s going to keep them out of your space if they already got in w/one of your suitemates, though)
15) yes. google ucsd chinese classes.
16) google ucsd clubs. or if you’re looking for club sports, recreation.ucsd.edu
17) no idea
18) nope, everyone gets something
19) it’s a large statue. also a festival. also the unofficial campus mascot. google ucsd sungod

How is the dating scene in general?

@chainiwatmj, I really recommend living oncampus at least for your first year. Living in the dorms really does create a bond that nothing else really does, and it’s hugely convenient for a freshman just getting oriented. I personally wish I’d moved offcampus for my second year, mostly because living in an oncampus apartment in ERC works out to be a lot more expensive for me than it will be to live in an offcampus apartment next year with two roommates, but you can decide which one you like better after you’ve lived oncampus for a year.

Hey~

I just got accepted into Marshall with undecided, but I want to transfer to a bio major. Right now I’m taking IB HL Biology, which according to this [International Baccalaureate Credits](http://www.ucsd.edu/catalog/front/IBCredits.html) I can get exempt from BILD 1,2,3. I was just wondering if BILD 1,2,3 were helpful in the classes you are taking now? Would you recommend me to to use the credit to get exempt out the lower div class or should I take the classes just to reinforce my bio basics.

Hi i got in UCSD undeclared because bio is impacted. I was wondering if you know anyone who transferred in biology later and how hard it is TP get in. I’m not exempt from any lower division science courses so I need to take all that. I’m thinking of taking physics at a community college during summer though. Would that transfer to uc credits? Because otherwise I might only be able to transfer at the end of sophomore year at UCSD. Is that too late? And lastly, if I do get in, I would like to take the premed route. Is that really hard to do, because I’m worried i won’t maintain a high enough gpa to get into med school. Btw, what is the average gpa to get into a med school like ucsd for example? also do u think UCSD prepares you for med school?
Sorry for asking so many questions :frowning: and thank you in advance !

I also have another question. I’m not sure if you know about the sixth college’s dorms, but I heard there are two cabins that have coed bathrooms. Do you know if that’s true? Also are the showers and toilets split? And is there room for someone to change or do we change in the shower? Lol sorry so awk but
I’m so confused

I know there are like 4 options right?: apartment, 2persons, 3 persons, and by yourself in a room. which one is the best?

I could be completely wrong, but I doubt a public university could have coed bathrooms. Not without a copious amount of waivers and agreements to sign haha.

Cal does. They put up handmade signs to segregate stalls, like “standing only” and “sitting only”

@iccypenguin

1) how hard would it be to switch out of Warren if it isn’t the right fit for me?
Ah everyone seems to want to switch out of the college they were admitted to! To be completely honest it usually doesn’t happen. However, it’s really not that big of a deal! Most people end up liking the college they were put into, so stop stressing.

2) how long are the breaks ? i know that it goes by trimesters but i’d like to get an idea on how many days we get off for christmas/thanksgiving to see if i can visit home

This year winter break was 4 weeks and spring break was 1 week. You won’t get to see your family as much but hey, it’s just part of being in college. I recommend you call, facetime or skype! If it makes you feel better, summer is obscenely long.

3) is having a car essential? or even a bike? or is there a campus bus and how much would it cost?

A car is definitely not essential unless you plan on going home a lot or have an internship. Parking is very expensive and it’s very difficult to find a spot. Bikes aren’t really necessary either, but that’s up to you. SD buses are free for UCSD students. You just need a special sticker (they give it to you).

4) what should an out-of-state person like me bring?
Since you’re out-of-state I recommend you order all college items from Bed, Bath and Beyond and pick it up at the SD location (ex:comforter set). I’ll post a list of college essentials here closer to the start of fall quarter.

5) is Warren far away from the main buildings/center of the campus?

It’s a little far from many buildings. However, it’s not a big deal. If you really don’t want to walk you could take the shuttle.

6) i’m thinking about majoring in something in the medical field; would being in Warren put me far away from my classes?

This shouldn’t be a concern.

7) how far away is the beach? the virtual tour said a 15 minute walk but does that apply to Warren or anywhere on campus?

It’s literally within walking distance. From Muir it’s about 15 minutes away. Muir is on the other side of campus from Warren. If you’re into surfing or anything like that it’s a nice option.

8) would i be able to meet other students from other colleges? or would being in Warren restrict me?

Definitely! That’s what your classes are for! If you don’t feel like you’re meeting enough people join some all-campus orgs or a frat.

9) how is Warren compared to the other colleges?

Seriously, not a big deal. Most people I know in Warren enjoy it.

10) how is the security? my mom is already worried about me going so far…

La Jolla is a town full of wealthy elderly people. There isn’t too much of a threat there. I’ve never felt unsafe here. If you’re walking around campus at night you can get campus security to accompany you.

11) what is the average class size?
It depends on the class. Many lower division science classes have 300 students. It gets smaller as you get further into your college career. It’s not as big of a deal as people like to make it. Go to your professor’s and TA’s office hours. Although there are TONS of students, only 10 or so even try to go to office hours. Also, I’ve never had a class taught by a TA. The professors show up.

12) what is the residence like?

I like Warren’s dorms. They promote a sense of community within the suite. It’s very cozy.

13) would it be hard to request a change in roommate?
I know some people who have changed roommates. However, I wouldn’t worry about that right now. I recommend you enter college with a positive and somewhat lenient attitude, or you might run into problems with your roomate. If you have problems sharing your space request a single (it will be even more expensive, though).

14) are the dorms co-ed?

Suites are not co-ed.

15) do they offer chinese classes?
Yes.

16) where should i go if i want to get involved in clubs and student activities?
You’ll see, the entire first week is devoted to informing you about that.

17) i know it’s early but how’s the study abroad program?
I haven’t participated in it yet, but those who have gone seem to have really liked it.

18) is it hard to get a job in/around campus? (i signed up for work study)
If you have work study it shouldn’t be too hard.

19) what is Sun God?
It’s a pretty big and epic concert that SD hosts annually. Last year Wiz Khalifa, Mike Posner and some other musicians were there. If you’re into that kind of stuff you’ll like it.

@chainiwatmj It depends on your personal preferences. Honestly though, you’re probably going to get a triple unless you request a single. Doubles are rare (at least in Muir). I enjoyed my triple freshman year!

@Edreed20 It’s a bit odd, to be honest. Certain groups go all out, while others don’t. And then there are random people who find someone. There are some who are long-distance (especially freshman year). The dating scene is not all that active, though. If you’re having trouble with that maybe a frat would help?

@youseedee Med school isn’t easy to get into no matter which college you go to. I don’t know the average GPA for med school admits from UCSD. Maybe that information is online? However, on average I think the GPA is around a 3.7. Also, you can’t take courses for your major at community college. You can take GE courses, though.

Hi there,

I’ve been accepted into UCSD for Biological Sciences but I’m now trying to decide between here and UW Madison. I know that UCSD Bio tends to focus more on human biology, and San Diego being the Biotech center helps in terms of research and internship opportunities.

However, I’m also given to understand that the UCSD campus atmosphere also leaves a little to be desired in terms of social activity. I also hear that because of the quarter system, people spend most of their time studying.

What do you think? Your opinion will greatly help in my decision-making. Thanks.

@ justmyview
thanks for answering every one of the questions! it must have taken a long time haha
i asked about having a car and you said that it’s not necessary unless i do an internship. do you know generally what year students can start doing them? or does it really depend on the major of the student?
you also mentioned Bed, Bath and Beyond for things to bring for someone out of state. what exactly is it? is it a store in SD? or is a specific service provided by UCSD?

also what is the difference between triples and doubles (mostly in terms of spacing)? i know doubles are harder to get and more expensive but i’m worried about the triples being too overly crowded but at the same time i’d like to have 2 roomies rather than just 1

@icypenguin It isn’t common for freshmen to get internships. People usually start 2nd or 3rd year. However, if you’re responsible and have good communication skills you might be able to land one spring quarter.

Ah, that’s the same dilemma I had. However, I was very lucky in that I got an expanded triple, which was the best of both worlds. Honestly, most triples can get a little crowded. However, it also depends on the college. For example, I know Muir’s triples seem a little more spacious than some other colleges’.

You can ask for a double, but they were rare when I was a freshman. I don’t know if the situation has changed since some colleges have constructed additional housing.

@Archer UCSD is not a super social school. If you want to go to school in an environment in which everyone’s super spirited and in party mode SD isn’t for you. That being said, there are many groups of social people,so if you want to party you can find people to party with.

If you want a good GPA yes, expect to study a lot. If you have good time management, though, you can definitely make time for partying. I know some people who aren’t geniuses yet manage to party several times a week with their frats and maintain a high GPA.

I hoped that helps!
