Have some fun- not exactly on topic but SPORTS

What is happening to UMD and sports. Today Maryland suffered a defeat by CLEMSON. yes Clemson. it is looking like UMD is headed to the NIT for the second year in a row. I hat Clemson. They always have our number. The maryland football team did not get a bowl berth with a record below .500 and the basketball team is below .500 in the ACC right now. UMD is now a 'bubble' team.

The thing is sport programs are a lot different in college. Its not the NFL or NBA where bad teams supposedly get BETTER by earlier draft picks. In the NCAA they get worse. The teams soon become unable to recruit. If I get into UMD i really hope they turn it around. I love UMD anyway. I have cheered for them for years and unless i go to an ACC foe i will support UMD regardless. They might be heading themselves into years of extreme under preformance. For example every major HS dominant football player in Maryland did not go to UMD. They all signed with Penn State. Penn State coming off a great year now are going to be better taking some of the best prospects from maryland.

Regardless if you are into sports or not, you know you will support Maryland when you get there. Hell, some of you might be tipping cars and lighting things ablaze if the Terps beat an ACC rival. So even if you are not a major sports fan this has got to be an interest to all that plan on having any fun watching sports when they are at UMD.

I agree... I am a terps fan and ugh that defeat to Clemson last night was awful... MD sports are going downhil.. haha but I mean thats only two sports.. other sports like baseball, lacrosse and soccer are great.. but no one pays attention to those sports lol. The football team had only one good year that time when we went to the Orange Bowl and lost to Florida.. arg I thought this basketball season would be great with John Gilchrist leading the team.. but that idiot decides to enter the draft and now plays Israel ball lol. Chris McCray who couldn't even meet the academic standards.. arg idiot. Now its all youngsters who make poor decisions.. Nik Caner Medley needs to step it up big time.

My Dad went to CP and we've had football season tix for years and win or lose - its great to watch Ralph on the field - there's nothing like a tailgate and a good game on a crisp fall afternoon. The stands are full and the spirits are high - don't know of any riots after football games - bt there have been some great ones in the last few years. Seems to me that having a classic coach like Ralph Fridgen will continue to entice good players. Yeah Penn State had an awesome year (and its my number 2 school and I'm in - yahoo) - but the Big Ten can't compare to the ACC in my book. I'm just an ACC gal. Went up to a University of Delaware (my #3 school) game this year and the mascot seemed to be the only one excited with a win. The stands were only half full and there was def no electricity working among the fans. Went to several Towson games (my safety school - got in 6 days after I applied) too - and nothing cooking there either. Halfhearted attendance by students - mostly player's families in the stands

I was at Penn State this past weekend for a basketball game - and after attending Terps' games for years, I was impressed at how "polite" everybody was. They even sell bottled drinks and don't take the lids away from you - apparently thet have no fear that bottled water will become missles lobbed at the opposing team or fans - and they wold probably ask persmission and say thank you before rocking a car. BUT it took many boyscouts and youth groups to fill the stands - and even then they were only 3/4 full. The students had a great time - and the band was better than Maryland's in my humble opinion - and the cheerleaders and dance team looked like they were coeds fresh off the surrounding farms. Not much to do up there in isolation - so sports are a big draw - but tix are easy to get. One Orange Bowl win doesn't make an awesome sports program - although they certainly attracted the biggies from Maryland high schools this year. Paterno is a great coach and a big draw - but he can't last forever.

All of the above is a contrast to UMCP - where you have to enter the lottery to get a student basketball ticket - and the more non-ACC games you attend early in the season - the better your chances of getting an ACC ticket. I was at Comcast Center last year when they beat Duke in OT and I can tell you there's nothing like that feeling. And we went to Madison Square Garden and watched them at the NIT - but what a sick night. Getting Gilcrist and his attitude off the team was a blessing - and if McCray thinks he doesn't even have to go to class - even though Williams stresses academics to his team - then boo on him. What surprises me is that no one knew he was in trouble until it was too late. If Gary had known he wasnt going to class - I wouldnt have been surprised to see him march Chris there himself. BUT - maybe if the team has a few slow years we'll be able to get tix. Dad has been a Terrapin Club member for years and hopes to get season tix before he dies - but isnt counting on it. So 4 years from now when we're alums -assuming we all get good news this weekend - we won't be able to watch an ACC game in person - will have to watch on the telly at the Greene Turtle. Win or lose - there's nothing like the Comcast Center and Gary William's sweaty armpits for an exciting basketball game.

I just can't wait!

Ralph Friedgen's daughter is in my grade and she goes to my school lol.

So can she get us tix for ball?

i am sure she could lol. Man i hope things turn around. It is painful to watch. I just have a fear that if I get in and I go there that there is a possibility that they will not be contenders for those years. I really want a championship year again. :( That is obviously rare and if it happens while we are there it will be a blessing

Things will get better. they have to. I know one thing, if i get in, I will be yelling my head off at every single game every single year. No way will i miss any football or basketball games that are at UMD. never. I am going to soak it all up while it lasts.

I can't wait for college. I mean i love it here at home and i am not one of those people that are dying to get out of the house but i can't wait.

GO TERPS!!

Maryland soccer is still a beast, regardless.

True.

Maryland beat GT in overtime today :)

let me just add my two cents: I'm not very knowledgeable about the Md. football program, but I think a recruiter at Penn who has ties in the state of Maryland, has made many of Maryland recruits lots of promises...whether he can keep them or not, we'll see. The little ESPNZONE episode with..what's hisname...logan el...was a disgrace...Md is better off without that grandstanding fool. What an idiot.

Now for basketball, anyone who has never been to a Md. ACC conference game at Comcast Center, has not lived! This is by far the most awesome arena you'll set foot in...college OR pro. The fans, students and alum, make this a great experience. As for the team itself, the 2005 senior class was highly touted four years ago and they have not lived up to expectations and have been a bust. The problems with Gilchrest have been beaten to death; Travis Garrison got arrested for sexual assault and...Chris McCray has no one to blame but himself. He let his coach, teammates, school, peers and state down, buy being a lazy student and thinking he was above the rules because he played for MARYLAND. I loved him as a player for 3 1/2 years BUT...if my daughter needed a coach to take her to class, then I've failed as a parent....just as his parents failed him. No one is above the rules... I am sick of hearing it's the coaches fault. McCray put Gary Williams in an awful spot....any student/fans who are not supporting the team because one player let the team down and now they are having a difficult season, does not deserve to go to Maryland. You have to trust your recruting and hope the guys sitting on the bench, pick up the slack.

And another note...Maryland was voted NUMBER ONE in fans/students supporting their team, in one of the major publications. This speaks volumes for the University. Give me the name of one school whose athletics has not had adversity in one time or another...

I am passionate about Maryland and their basketball team....if you are on the fence about attending Maryland because of lack of a national championship every year in a major sport, go somewhere else. Maryland needs students who will cheer for them no matter what....

I was at the Georgia Tech game - my rents wrangled tix to take me to celebrate the admit news! I concur - Maryland BBall is awesome. When I was younger, I got to go to a few games in the old Cole Field House - that was cool - but COMCAST can't be beat - its an awesome venue. Games like Saturday - where they keep you on the fence - could shorten your life from stress - but when they pull it out - its pure BLISS! Penn State has nothing - repeat NOTHING on Maryland when it comes to bball.

Football is just plain fun at Maryland - they have some awesome wins - and some disappointing losses - thought Ralph was going round the bend last year - but the fans hang in there and sitting in the student section is a blast. Just can't imagine it being better anywhere else.

I'm looking forward to some of the other sports as well - growing up in maryland - lax is near and dear to my heart - played for years until I just couldn't fit in the time anymore - but am looking forward to taht as well.

GO TERPS!

Good for you! Let me add my Congrats and best wishes for happy times to you at UMD! I talked to my d. online last night...in her second semester she is settled and much happier than the fall. That's a time for working out the kinks, I guess...she has managed to keep ahead of her studies...(Dean's List!.yay!), practices, games, etc. and keep time also for a social life. Md. basketball is what drew her to the school...it was her dream to attend and she had to fight for it...but worth it. Besides performing at all football and mens basketball games, she's attend women's basketball games, soccer matches and many intramural sports. Get involved, be a fan...no matter what the sport or if the team is winning or losing.

Ahhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhhh Gosh!!! Maryland falls to Florida. That was such an important game. Looks like NIT this year. I thought they could make a run but with miami, UNC and virginia it seems they will have to pull all three to be in good position but the i just don't see that happening. Always keep the hope.

Maryland is making a last ditch run. They will most likely need to beat Georgia Tech tonight and then advance in the ACC tourney to get Boston College next. This is an extremely important game. WATCH!!!!@#@!#!@#@!

you have to be a sports fan to be at maryland. Even if you are not one now. Why not become one now!?!

BC Maryland 9:30 tonight. If you have any thought of going to Maryland you best watch this game!

Well they beat Virgina - that was a blessing - and on to the ACC.

But talk about painful - worst part is that after the Ga Tech game I had my hopes up for the BC game. Wonder if Gary will turn down the NIT bid.

I mean just hold your head up and walk away big guy - then buy a new case of antiperspirant and find a darn point guard who can show up for class! Next year....maybe next year.

Hey cheapseats - check out webshots and search for pics of the various dorms - you'll see partying galore.

Thank God Lax has started.

haa, I have been searching through webshots for all my schools to see whats going on. Pretty fun stuff. I can't wait till next year. I find myself visiting maryland everyother week now.

Arghhhhh NIT was so painful - come on lax!

My lady terps are going to take this to the championship.

Check out Baylor vs UMD on none other than ESPN right now. UMD 35 Baylor a dismal 28.

seriously watch this. Maryland 49 baylor 32

Dominance

our lady terps are going to the championship! Against DUKE!
