I read a thread at Northwestern that spoke about large numbers of sexual assaults. The persons who posted about it spoke of the university response being to ask the assailants to write apology letters in their own time or to leave future parties before the girls who had been assaulted. They didn't say why the girls didn't go through the police, but maybe the police in Chicago are worthless.

Is this a problem at Berkeley? Should girls carry pepper spray? What about Juniors and Seniors who have to walk to apartments off campus.

Safety is an important issue. How safe is Berkeley? Does anyone have any specific information on whether there is a danger or no danger?

There have been assaults. I mean, I’m pretty sure there’s assaults at every college…
Berkeley is relatively safe as long as you’re smart. This is not to say though that Berk can be considered the safest place ever. Some may consider having pepper spray handy.

The most recent news in Cal would be that mini skirt harrasser.

Assaults of all kinds happen everywhere, not just on college campuses. Assaults are the least of your concerns. Once you get to berkeley, you will worry about grades and gpa more than anything else.
