I, nor my son, truly was not aware that FAFSA had to be completed every year. Maybe because his scholarships and grants are renewable based on his gpa and course load. So imagine my horror when my daughter (who is a high school junior) and I do a college visit event this past Saturday and attend the Financial Aid session and the leader says repeatedly that FAFSA has to be completed every year!!!

Of course I reach out to my son right away and he did not know this either - we completed the update yesterday.

Have we ruined our opportunity to receive again the grants/scholarships he was awarded this past year?? I'm just sick about missing the priority deadline.

Contact his school and ask. There is no way to know otherwise.

You need to contact the college to find out. Since he was a continuing student they may have carved out the funding for him but we would just be guessing.

Well, you’ve done it as soon as you knew. You need to call the school and find out what the story is going to be there. Call the financial aid office and ask directly. Also, does the school require PROFILE as well? Look on the website for continuing student financial aid and see what they have to say, but do talk to a financial aid advisor as well.

Before you panic, check the due date for FAFSA for your son…it’s always earlier for freshman than for sophs, juniors and seniors. I know with my two older kids they didn’t start looking at financial aid for returning until late April (when the incoming freshman were done.)

the words “renewable” suggest to me that these are merit scholarships, are they?

What were the grants called?

Thanks - that makes me feel better! I sent a text to him to make time to visit the FA office to discuss.

You might want to look up if there are any specific things your son has to do to renew the awards if there are scholarships in the mix. I was requested to write a thank you note to a benefactor when I was at school, and my one son who did get an outside award, did the same at the end of the year.

Texas Public Education Grant and UNT Tuition Grant.

A for effort. F for not stopping and smelling the roses.

Time for the talk with your son … Dear Son: Please pay attention to the emails from your financial aid office, informing you of upcoming deadlines. (I guarantee he got them & ignored them.)

I had a discussion with a college prof (music) last night about current students and E-Mail. He has been forced to resort to texting and tweeting to get info out to his class because they just don’t check E-Mail.
