I have seen on cc that a few over the years received a rejection from a top tier school and then receivedd an acceptance packet, but in those instances they were told the rejection was a mistake. There are some human errors from time to time, but those instances are very rare.
Regarding appeals, most school especially very selective ones do not allow it. With 20,000 appilcants and 80% rejected, the admission process would never end. Most consider their decision final. There are some schools like the UC's that have a process, but most do not.

well, the school I am appealing to only has 10,000 applicants, with over half accepted, and they don't advertise appeals but they do accept them and review them...but yeah, you only have about a 5% chance...but if you have new and compelling information to show them that wasn't on the application, or if you have a situation that would explain why you weren't able to succeed as much as you could have (death in the family, family problems, etc), and if you could show your personality through your letter, you might be able to get them to change their minds. Good luck to all!

Appeals are not opportunities or second chances, but more of corrections, clarifications, and additions to your original/first chance. This is very important to remember when you appeal to them.

I sent in my appeal letter today O.O I hope this works out for the best.

What Birdkiller said is right. Appeals are for if they got your SAT score wrong or you did something amazing in the past few months. Its not a letter to tell them how much you want to go there.
