Have you conferred with someone from Columbia about the admissions process?

How much does this question matter exactly? I want to submit part 1 of my application already but I feel like if I don't write anyone down for this question I will be at a disadvantage... I know it seems silly but I can't help thinking that every little thing matters.

Can someone confirm that “Have you conferred with someone from Columbia about the admissions process?” is an exact question that they ask? If so, it’s hopelessly vague and ambiguous. What is “conferred”? Who is “someone from Columbia”? What is “the admissions process”?

This is the exact question they ask:

Have you conferred with any Columbia representative about the admissions process (e.g., admissions officer, coach, alumnus, faculty member)? If so, with whom?

don’t feel like you have to answer it. I’m pretty sure it’s one way of identifying a hook, e.g, a recruited athlete would say he conferred with the coach. if you stretch the question, you might just end up looking pushy, which could work against you.

Besides a coach…maybe you have a family friend who is a teacher and said “let me know if you apply, I’ll put in a good word”. Or someone saw your stats at a presentation in your area and said “be sure to let me know if you decide to apply”. Gives administration someone to whom they can go and say “hey, what do you think about this one, I hear you’ve been talking to them, got any notes, know them well?”

I just submitted my app. part 1 and learned that they give you your ID number within 14 days… which means I might be late for the deadline!! When do they give you the ID number usually? After 2-3 days? I had no idea that it takes this long to receive it!!!

Um, the ad coms are too busy to track down every random alum who knows you. There’s a reason they use LoRs in the process – because detailed essays written by teachers/supervisors who are a better way to find out more about you.
