have you ever considered joining the military?

for any reason? maybe to pay for tuition or for the glory

I have. My step-father and father were both in the military so it is something I have thought about.

I’ve decided that it really isn’t for me, but I know a lot of kids who have (about half of my school joins the military either after high school or after college), and I definitely think it’s a respectable choice.

No, I am morally opposed to the use of violence to solve disputes stemming from ideological differences.

LOL. What “glory?” Do you mean the glory of seeing brutality? Do you mean the glory of murdering others? Do you mean the glory of risking your life for an unappreciative country? Take off your rose colored glasses and look at the world. There is no glory.

ArtsyGirl13, I personally strongly dislike when people say that. I’d say my rose-colored glasses statement applies to you too. What would you have us do? How do you make peace with the Taliban? How would you have reasoned with Hitler? How do you negotiate with Napoleon?

Short answer: You don’t. You can’t. There comes a point where war is necessary, and violence is the only solution, as anti-cliche as that sounds. War, like government, is necessary to protect our fundamental rights.

I thought about it for awhile but I don’t like the possibility, however small, that I could be put in combat.

I have thought about it, and am planning on it, actually. (Nice to freely admit it on here, at school when someone finds out they act very shocked, because I’m the smart person who everyone thinks will be going to Harvard). But yeah, I want to be an officer in the Marines. College comes first, hopefully at the Naval Academy, if I don’t get in, then ROTC at college.

I do not want to kill anyone, and want to be apart of no “glory” (Which nobody joins for, or if they do, they quickly realize that combat isn’t all that it’s cracked up to be), I just want to give back to those who’ve served/are serving our country. I agree with logicx. There comes a time when you just have to go to war. One of my friends at school gave me a really funny look when I told her I wanted to be in the military. She said she didn’t believe in war. “What about Hitler? 9/11? What then?”

She said we have to be peaceful. I asked her “What? And just let them kill us?” She said if that’s what it takes to achieve peace, then yes. I do not believe that at all, but that’s me.

I’m a history nerd, to put it simply. I love learning about history, especially post 1600 history of America. And learning about the different wars that have come along with out history, and I realized that as much as they try and sell little kids on war, the whole GI Joe aspect, it’s not there. I’m just a teenager, and cannot even begin to imagine what combat is like, but by reading and learning about history, I at least try to understand what it is like, and there’s no glory. Just people dying and coming home in body bags. And I know that I could potentially come home dead, or back to a country that doesn’t like what I’ve done, but I can live with that. All I want is for people to respect my decision.

I really respect people who decide to join the military, but I could never do it. I’m too much of a wimp (I would probably see a bee or something and run away hahahaha) xD.

@logicx24 perhaps a better word would be “honor”
though people do join for the “glory” of it, that’s something you can’t deny

I personally have never thought of joining the army, but it’s for other reasons. Unlike Logic and Artsy up there, I am not anti-war, I’m not pro-war, I’m pro soldier- for artsy to make that generalization is insane. For personal reasons (I like stability, I want to be close to home and the constant relocation is not something I would be comfortable with.) I would not.

Anyway, clearly, artsy is not well informed about the military; I know a few people who went into the military for the benefits, and college opportunities. I know a girl who is going into the military to be a social worker and another to be a doctor- so it isn’t all about violence.

Sorry, rant over.

Thought about it, planned for 10 years that I’d join the military after I go to college for engineering, then realized that 1) Engineering in the civilian world is preferable to it in the military and 2) I hate taking orders from stupid people. Realized #2 in JROTC, and frankly, there are a lot of dumb people in the military, no different than many other organizations. But the fact that the military requires you to always obey like a robot is not something I like.

Artsy, joining the military doesn’t mean you support war. It means you are fighting for our country and doing everything it takes to ensure a life for future generations. Just because you don’t support war doesn’t mean you can’t support the military. Good men and women will still be risking their lives everyday FOR YOU while you live safely without a thought in your home.

On that note, I have definitely considered joining the military. Unfortunately, while my dad is in the military, my parents don’t support that decision. I would’ve liked to go to a service academy, but seeing as that’s not an option I may join ROTC in sophomore year of college if I decide it’s truly what I want to do.

Logic done got it right.

No. I couldn’t physically anyways…

Oh and if cc had a like button, I would like x10 logic’s answer. Well said.

I’ve definitely considered it, but after college. Most of my family has been in the military, in the army, navy, and air force. If I do decide to go into the military it’ll be the navy.

Being the son of a Veteran, and have family history in the military, I take offense to those who say things as Artsy as said. We don’t live in a perfect world, and someone has to do the dirty work. War is never pretty, but it’s a necessary part of the world. We can’t just all shake hands and make life better. People don’t work that way.

Can we go to war for the wrong reasons? Yes. But those who join the military mostly aren’t pulling the strings. Leave it to the Government for that part.

Now that that’s done.

I was literally moments away of signing for the Navy and doing ROTC in college. They gave me instant selection and had really wanted me. Seeing as I waited late to apply for the Naval Academy and my area is hard for nominations, it was a good option. My dad vetoed the idea and said I couldn’t join. I did however, get another gov’t scholarship.

But yes,I was considering either Navy or Air Force.

I have thought about the Naval Academy but, honestly, it’s just not the path I want my life to go in.

I agree with everything logic said, but at the same time my own personal feelings are different. I don’t agree with war in many instances (and I’m not talking about World War II or other instances where war/violence was the only clear solution). However, I still have 100% respect and support for our military. The military are just doing their job. My problem lies with those in charge on Capitol Hill.

I’ve considered it but only because my family has had a lot of war heroes and high ranking officers in it, so becoming an officer in the military is sort of a right of passage in my family. I, myself, am a non-aggression pacifist, so I understand the need for military as defense, but I don’t want to be fighting a war we initiated which is always a possibility in the Army, so I’m still considering the Coast Guard and other more domestic opportunities.

I’ve thought about Air Force before (because of its rep as an easy branch haha.) I’m even taking the asvab Wednesday. But honestly I would probably only join as a last option.

I hate order and being told what to do. I would talk back to superior officers and get court martialed or whatever they do to people who do that.

Don’t like the serious nature of the job.

Not a big fan of commitment. 7 years, nope.

If I was a was in the military I’d be a jag, and I guarantee all of that Tom cruise stunt doesn’t fly.

I am opposed to war BUT I recognize that it is required sometimes. In cases like Iraq that was not required, and Afghanistan was necessary but no longer is. I love my country and want to serve it but will not be able to do so in an armed service capacity.

As an air force brat,I find it distasteful that people thinh that all wee wasn’t is war. Truth is all most everyone loves their Countyand it’s freedoms that they will fie for it. All most all the generals fight issuing just war theory. UnTull peoplemade it political. Remember governments make wars militaries protect.

Back to topic.

Yes, I think I will serve at least 6 years. Probably get an ROTC scholarship.

Also jrotc is nothing like the military.

And finally logic has gotten an imaginary like from me
