Have you ever felt embarrassed to be an American?

^ Ok, and I’ve lived in England. And they don’t think of Americans that way. The only place I’ve ever been where people take any of the tabloids seriously is France and even they really don’t.

“Although, the fat American stereotype is a REASONABLE one because something like 2/3 of adults are overweight.”

Now you’re contradicting yourself. You just said that thinking that British people have bad teeth is a stereotype because it doesn’t apply to everyone. Well, being fat doesn’t apply to everyone in the US, either. It might be generally true, but does that really justify the stereotype?

^ I said it was REASONABLE. I don’t actually know any British people with bad teeth. It’s just like it’s REASONABLE to say that African-Americans are black. Are they all? No. But the majority of them are. It’s a REASONABLE assumption.

Im not embarrassed by myself being american but not all hapy-go-lucky about it either…I do sometimes feel embarrassed for the dingbats that make america look like uneducated morons with no etiquit(sp).

Whenever my friends and I would ride the subway in Madrid or wander around an art museum, we attempted to keep our voices down. Also, even though most people around us were speaking Spanish we never discussed anything we wouldn’t discuss in public in America. Considering the incredible numbers of Europeans who speak English, it’s probably wise to avoid saying anything private under the presumption that nobody will understand.

Somehow whenever I think of American tourists abroad I am reminded of the David Sedaris story about his experience with the American couple on the subway in Paris. Has anyone else read that story? It’s funny (as all Sedaris essays are) but pathetically sad. Some people really are ignorant.

^ I agree with ali.

I’m not ashamed of my country. I love America. I am embarrassed by the government though, now more than ever. Oi!

Wigwam, what article? Could you post a link? I want to see it now lol.

Romani, I’ve had no luck googling it, but it’s in his book Me Talk Pretty One Day. It’s classic. I might’ve heard him read it on This American Life at some point too, but I can’t remember.

The tourists assume that because he appears local he cannot speak English, then they proceed to insult him very rudely. Except it’s like a million times funnier than how I’ve just described it.

^ Haha. There were some Mexicans at a local fruit store that did that to me and my mom. My mum is from Spain and fluent in Spanish obviously and they were saying VERY crude things about us. She turned around and told em off in Spanish. I’m amazed at what people will say when they assume others can’t understand them…

^ I’ve heard of that book mentioned before lol. There’s an 5 page .pdf file on the internet; google “me talk pretty one day essays”, it’s the first link I believe.

Guys, this video proves exactly why I hate being American.

[YouTube - Americans are NOT stupid - WITH SUBTITLES](http://youtube.com/watch?v=fJuNgBkloFE)

hahaha romani I’ve done that a few times..just turn around and let em have it.

I agree our government is just…pssh..a mess these days

sAxsKy, you could fine those people anywhere though.

sAxsKy, that video was full of massive lolz.

It has to be fabricated though. At least, I’m hoping it is.

I mean, hopefully, for every clip in that video, there were 200 intelligent answers that they didn’t use…

It was hilarious, though. XD

Yeah I know lol. I must have watched that video like 30x already. It never gets old but I don’t think it was fabricated because I can’t imagine people publicizing how stupid they are in front of millions of viewers so it has to be legit.

^ Ever watch “Jay-walking” on Jay Leno? You’d like it lol :p

and im proud to be an american, where at least i know im freeeeeeeeeeee

Wow, sAxsKy, that video was… enlightening, to say the least. LOL. I actually think I know a few people like that. O_O

That video was funny but depressing at the same time lol.I actually know a few people like that at my school.
