Have you ever thought about this? >> Writing a Book for Admissions/Increased Chances

I have heard several times that being a published author in a field you want to major in is a great hook. That doesn't sound too hard... write?... pun intended. I mean... you're just writing, and anybody can do that. CC, what are your thoughts on writing a book for enjoyment and for an increased status on you college app?

Please feel free to discuss this freely

Don’t do it. At least not expecting or trying to get published.

First, you almost certainly won’t be able to get a good publisher. Self-publishing is not an option if you want to be taken seriously at all. You might get con publishers. Writing a book solely for publishing will almost always result in failure in that very field.
Second, if you do somehow manage to get this published, this *ty high school writing of yours is going to represent your name, writing ability, and style for the rest of your life. Are you really willing to restrict your work for the rest of your life?
Third, doesn’t sound too hard? People who are actually really *ing good at writing can’t get novels published. Getting a novel published is insanely hard. It’s not a thing you say “Oh! Heard that’s good for getting into college! I’ll just take three days to write this novel, maybe two days to get an agent. No big deal.” It’s not something you expect even after a good year of very, very hard work.

If you have been published in magazines like Glimmer Train, then maybe you have a chance. But I doubt you have, considering how easy you think getting published is.

Glimmer Train? Who named that?

^^ @wanton having no intention to derail your rant… I never mentioned I was planning on doing this. Oh the inferences people make up…

This is just a discussion, you deserve your own opinion, but don’t be too personal

PS My writing’s better than yours

This thread brings up another question:
Is a book considered a book only when it is published?

If a tree falls in a forest…

…and no one is around to hear it, does it make a sound?

Yes it does :)

And I think that if you feel the need to write a book, you should, but that it shouldn’t be done just to get into college… just like anything else. Follow your passion. JMO

haha I’ve always thought it did too…why wouldn’t it?

again, I’m not planning on writing a book… unless admissions would like it…jk jk jk

good thread about this: http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/college-admissions/326222-does-writing-book-increases-my-chances.html

Yeah writing a book is super difficult. My dad is a published author. It took him years to win a contest to get published. He couldn’t get his 3rd book published. It is near impossible to get anything printed.

Yes… I guess if one is a good enough writer to have his work looked at and published then that tells a college something because publishing a book is almost impossible.
