<p>I assumed that an weighted GPA of 3.8, a superscored 31 ACT, and over 100s of hours of variety service hours/tutoring were enough to get accepted.</p>
<p>I got the Engineering Alliance Offer where I have to go to savannah for 2 years and then come back to atlanta to finish my 4 years. Idk which one I got(accepted, rejected) but its not accepted I guess.</p>
<p>Son was deferred, then waitlisted – 3.55 gpa weighted, 3.4 by Ga. Tech core calculations. 4 AP courses, 34 ACT, recalculated as 2125 SAT by Tech methodology. Georgia resident. So-so ECs. Pluses: Ga. resident, test scores, very strong senior year, goes to Tech feeder high school. Minuses: overall gpa, ECs.</p>

<p>Malliford - you are not the only one. My SAT is above 2300, ACT 34, 5 AP, AP scholar, “above so-so” ecs and I got defer.</p>

<p>Ga Tech has a unique way of calculating test scores. Not only do they superscore SAT scores, they also superscore ACT. In addition, Tech mixes and matches scores between the tests. If you have a high ACT math score and a high SAT writing score, they combine and convert to SAT numbers, a Tech admissions rep told me. ACT Reading and Science scores disappear, and the three SAT components are counted. My son had a higher SAT writing score than ACT, so his SAT score is combined with ACT Math and English. His 34 ACT score translates to a 2265 at some schools (accepted!), the fact that he lost 33 (reading) and 36 (science) subsection scores—plus the fact that Georgia Tech takes the writing score (which ACT takes all of three minutes to grade) yielded a 140 drop in what Ga. Tech considered—a perfect storm, you might say. A 34 ACT Math, 31 ACT English, and 680 SAT Writing yields 2125 – an average score for admitted students this time. </p>
<p>Amazingly difficult to get into Tech this year. Just 5 years ago, 60 percent of applicants were getting in.</p>

<p>Just goes to show they look at things beyond GPA and test scores nowadays. I got accepted with a 3.5 UW on Tech’s scale, 2070 SAT, and an average list of extracurriculars. I’ve been heavily involved with music since the third grade and I think my essay about that helped push me over the top, as well as my accomplishments within music.</p>
<p>I tried everything under the sun to get on Tech’s radar in some capacity. I contacted the director of the music department and the director of the marching band just so they knew who I was and knew that I would be interested in music if I was accepted to Tech.</p>
<p>I also drove 900 miles from Massachusetts with my mom last spring to visit the school, which helps show them how badly you want to attend. </p>
<p>I worked my butt off to get my mid year grades to be all As (except for English, because let’s face it, we’re seniors haha. So that one was a B+). My courseload is rigorous, which I know they pay attention too.</p>
<p>To be honest, I was surprised at first at how many people who were more qualified academically (in terms of GPA, which is more effort than talent) than me got waitlisted or denied, but I’m realizing my other traits helped me immensely.</p>
<p>All in all, GT is just one school. It was my top choice and I knew I was in the lower portion of applicants who had a chance of getting in this year. I exhausted every possible avenue and it worked out for me. I’m confident with those stats you’ve already been accepted to a great school and I expect you’ll succeed wherever you end up attending.</p>
<p>Did you tell them you’d be in marching band? BRILLIANT HOOK. LOL. They have to bring in ringers—I talked to a guy with a Tech T-shirt a couple of months ago. He said he’d graduated from Southern Polytechnic (in Marietta) and that he’d gotten the T-shirt from being in marching band at Ga. Tech, where his brother attended. If you talked to the music people, it’s quite possible they did a little recruting, which would–face it–explain everything, because Tech is really shorthanded musically. They even had to build a robot to play along with faculty!</p>
<p>Looks like my son will go to Emory or University of Georgia if he doesn’t get picked off the waitlist at Tech.</p>
<p>I agree. Tech became really selective this year. Funny how many of my friends who applied early with sub-par sat/act, gpa, and EC got in, while people who seemed more than qualified were not able to get in.</p>

<p>@Malliford - As a matter of fact, yes I did tell them I’d be in marching band. As for reporting/signing up for that, I have no idea how to do it. But if it helped me get in, I’m not complaining lol.</p>
