Just wondering, since when I visited family/friends on the East Coast, Cal got brought up in conversation & pretty much everyone I spoke to just talked ***** on Cal saying how it was for rich liberal tree-huggers, that it wasn't even a good school compared to schools there, and how it could actually hurt people who graduated from there and were trying to get hired on the East Coast since apparently many people there have prejudices against Berkeley.

Of course, I was like head explode since it's freaking Berkeley man, and I've always known it as one of the best public universities in the nation! And it's not like the people I was speaking to were all conservatives, there was a fairly good representation of different political ideals, even if the majority of them did lean to the left.

It just completely blew my mind to hear crap like that I wondered if anyone else has had a similar experience.

I think berkeley does get stereotyped as a liberal tree hugging school. And most people from IV league/ some private schools look down on UCB and UCLA the way some people at Cal and LA look down on “lesser” UCs

Berkeley goggles. Thats the only bad reputation I’ve heard. My aunt was talking down on me for considering UCSD (which according to her is “a party school” which is complete bs) and she’s an MIT grad. Ivy leaguers are out of their minds 1/2 the time anyways.

^ Holy **** corinnejay. I just came back from a family gathering 20 minutes ago and that was exactly what my aunt said about UCSD too. All I heard from her was how great Cal was etc etc and how much of a party school SB and SD were. SB for sure. But as for SD, I think she may be out of her mind.

Well I know mine is out of her mind lol. SDSU is wayyyyy more of a party school. And if I get rejected from cal (I hope not) UCSD is where I’ll be going.

I have also noticed that Berkeley gets stereotyped more often than other schools. I noticed that when I was going through the transfer process and I notice it even more now that I am here.

That’s why I urge people on this board to not listen to hearsay and to try to make contact with current students @ Cal to ask them questions directly. Even if you look at threads here, there is more mis-information and ****talking about Cal than anywhere else. I think it has a lot to do with the fact that Berkeley was/still is a culture and not just a University.

begelsbagels do you go there?

Haha. Wow, my parents/family don’t even know what a UC is. The pain of being a 1st gen.

@corrinejay SDSU for sure. They weren’t Playboy’s top three for nothing.

Berkeley… well coming from my super Cal aunt everything is perfect and peachy keen.

Unless you hate the cold and fog. Like me.

Empathy, the ‘pain’ of being a 1st gen? Perhaps you are using the word creatively. I feel nothing but pride as a 1st gen.

@corinne lmao Berkeley goggles! I had to go look that term up! The people there can’t ALL be that ugly, I mean come on!

Are we really saying that all the pretty people are ■■■■■■■■ and/or not serious about their education? I mean COME ON!

I actually feel that the way berkeley people are so care free is refreshing but I guess thats just me. And I actually think there are a decent number of beautiful people there. I was just saying it was a reputation Berkeley has.

there are hot ppl at berk but you have to know where to go, and if ur ugly then you have no room to speak

ugh where did all my room to speak go?!?!

I have fairly high standards, I like to think. If I can find a girl AS CUTE if not CUTER than this one: http://media1.break.com/dnet/media/2008/10/63%20Drunk%20Hippie.jpg I’ll be EXTREMELY happy :)

One of my friends is a cal alumnus who first went to upenn then transferred to cal. He took me on a tour of the school a few weeks back and he pretty much talked **** about the school the entire time. “This was where one of my female friends was assaulted while studying late at night by herself, this was where a guy jumped off Evans Hall during finals week, this is where my friend got mugged, here is the cafe where my we [asian people] got in a street fight with a group of white guys who called us [insert derogatory racial term here] as they drove by.” The last statement pretty much shows how no matter how liberal a place like Cal is, there is still that kind of racial tension.

hahaha…I had to look up the term too…hehe…I actually agree with Corinne, the attitude of people at Cal is so refreshing. They’re just real, non of this fake crap that people in LA seem to have shoved up their butt. I think some people find Berkeley people less attractive simple because they’re not covered in plastic surgery, bleached hair, and fake nails…I dunno, just my opinion…

@cupertino I have a feeling your friend just hangs out with the wrong people haha

@janey isn’t she a hottie janey!? think I can find a girl that’ll suit me @ berk?

berk is ridic chill
