For anyone who got it, do you think you could PM me your essay? I got pre-approval that I could use the 2009 prompt since I was already looking at it, and sent in a nine page philosophy paper.

Still can’t believe this.

If applying to colleges has changed me in any way: it’ll be either killing any sort of self-esteem and ego I had, or making me a misanthrope.

I’m so sorry, Reborn. … Like I said in a previous post, one of the brightest, most gifted members of Wooster’s current graduating class was turned down for the College Scholarship. … Your last sentence in #41 indicates to me you’re clearly the kind of articulate student Wooster wants and needs.

My D didn’t get it either. I wonder how much the essay counts, or is the essay the vehicle the shows the college that the student is interested, and then GPA/SAT/ACT determine the winners (taking into consideration they are not terrible writers)? The whole award is unique anyway, basically replacing the Deans Award if they receive the College Scholar (assuming that the College Scholar is more). I wonder how many students received the award but still plan to attend elsewhere, and how many students are no longer interested in Wooster now?

I haven’t really posted much on the Wooster boards, but I received my College Scholar letter today and decided to join the conversation. Congratulations to all the other recipients as well!

And to those who didn’t receive one (or whose child didn’t receive one), please don’t be discouraged. Trust me, I’ve already already felt the sting of losing in some major scholarship competitions. As I continued along in my college search, though, I began to receive some equally great opportunities, and I’m starting to see that a loss at one school or with one scholarship simply means that another great offer is going to come from somewhere else. So have faith; I’m sure you’re talented students with a bright future, whether it’s at Wooster or somewhere else. :)

My S didn’t get it either The way I understand the evaluation criteria, the essay is graded and the score is combined with the GPA and SAT/ACT scores to arrive at a final score. Clearly, we don’t know what weight they attach to each component, but if one of the three is below average, it could severely pull down one’s chances of winning the scholarship. This award is not issued by the admissions commission, so the way an applicant is judged (essay + combination of scores) could be different.

Also, I think the college scholar awards are not transferable, so if someone who was offered that enrolls somewhere else, someone else who didn’t get it before isn’t getting the unclaimed award.

D was notified by phone that she is a College Scholar - she is looking forward to seeing the actual letter in the mail! Wooster is one of her top schools, so she is thrilled! Congrats to all who have heard from Wooster - whether Dean’s Award or College Scholar - we think Wooster is very generous with merit aid.

Still nothing for us from Wooster re: College Scholar. No letter, no call. Our mail has been sketchy since the winter storm, so I’m hoping it’s just delayed. Anyone else still waiting to hear? Congratulations to those who have received their award!

S received his College Scholar award yesterday! We are very happy and excited, as Wooster is very high on his list. We will be making a second visit soon.

D got the good news today that she is a College Scholar! We are very pleased. Just wondering, which essay prompt did your son or daughter reply to? D used #3
