My kids go to a Catholic HS in St. Paul MN and SLU recruits here. Currently, 17 of our alumni attend SLU, which is considerably less than Creighton or Marquette. From where I see it, SLU is sort of a “2nd-ring” choice meaning it’s not one of the super-popular choices from this HS but not one of the far-flung obscure choices either.

I think the comparison of SLU (St. Louis) to Loyola University (Chicago) and Marquette (Milwaukee) are apt ones. Each of these schools attracts plenty of smart students from their specific area who are interested in a Jesuit place (though not restricted only to Catholics). The academics are certainly fine and will take most people where they need to go, but aren’t the tippy-top in that area (with Wash U, NU and U of Chicago being the “leads” in those cities). Solid schools, and not everyone has to be tippy-top either.

I’m all the way from California, and I’ve definitely heard of SLU. On the other hand, realistically speaking, I’ve only heard of the school thanks to its Medical Scholars Program, which I’ll be attending this fall. Honestly, save for religious affiliation and its superb Med / Physical Therapy / Law programs (a lot of stuff, admittedly), I probably would not have heard of it.

I also suffer from repetitive conversations:
“I’m going to SLU”
“Wait, WashU?”
“No, SLU.”

SLU is an interesting acronym.

Yes, but I used to live in St. Louis. So glad to have moved away…

Chicagoland:
I’ve heard of SLU. I think it is a decent school, I’m pretty sure it has an engineering program, and its nickname I think is the Bilikens (right?).

The Good News: Sure, I know about SLU.

The Bad News: I assumed you meant St. Lawrence University in Canton, New York, which weighs in at #58 in the USN&WR “Liberal Arts College” rankings. If you use the term “SLU” (pronounced “sloo”) in New England or New York, people will assume you mean St. Lawrence.

I’ve heard of St. Louis University too, due to basketball, but I never realized, until now, that it was also a “SLU”.

It would appear that there are also other SLUs, including Southeastern Louisiana University and St. Leo University (in Florida), which I had not heard of. Not to be confused with Cal Poly in San Luis Obispo, or SLO.

SLU is one of the better Jesuit colleges in the nation and Jesuit schools are highly regarded academically. Here is the list of all 28 Jesuit colleges:

yeah im from alabama & i know about it.
heard it was crappy bc a dumb girl i know got in hahaha

Saint Louis University is aggressively recruiting out of the immediate region and they offer VERY generous academic scholarships to kids with the appropriate stats and scores. My D got one, so we know. We toured the campus (during our St. Louis visit, which included WashU), liked it. The people were very friendly, the students happy and challenged. They also offer a unique aeronautical engineering degree with a flight school. Its a very pretty campus. The cathedral is gothic and gorgeous. The food we ate was good. It was decidedly less “frenetic” than WashU, on the other end of “the Park”. Saint Louis University is in mid-town St. Louis, near the theatre and arts district which is having a renaissance of sorts.

You are allowed to take classes at WashU if you are a student at Saint Louis University, to pick up something you want in particular, with the appropriate approvals of course.

Ultimately my D went elsewhere. (she was waitlisted along with hundreds of others at WashU).

i immediately thought of WUSTL. never heard of slu

SLU is a private Jesuit school with the “Billiken” as its mascot (a bit odd IMO). I live about 1.5 hours away from the school, along with WashU, so I’m quite familiar with it. I’ve heard that the school is pretty good if you want to go into medical research, but besides that there isn’t really much to say about it.

The school’s reputation is not really high (no offense) in the St. Louis area since it neighbors the overrated, but still very excellent, WUSTL.

I have heard of SLU only because of the basketball conference it’s in.

Its the oldest Jesuit institution in the country: 1815. Just an interesting factoid.

I, also, thought immediately of St. Lawrence University, an LAC in snowy upstate NY near the Canadian border.

The oldest Jesuit school is, of course, Georgetown. 1789 I believe. lol

Yes. Jesuit school in St. Louis. In the same “league” as Marquette, the Loyolas, etc.

We’ve heard of it. D applied and was accepted with a scholarship. It seemed to be a pretty neat place and there was a lot to like. D especially liked the idea of the Madrid campus. The additional cost of sending her there was a pretty strong factor in her not attending.
