Have you made reservations for Parents Weekend yet?

I understand that the competition for hotel rooms can get rough if your child's college is in a smallish town! Might be time for the freshman parents to go out on a limb, guess where their kids will wind up, and make reservations that can be readily cancelled. How's that for a control issue!!!

Guess what ,I am right there with you. My problem is that Southwest only books 6 months ahead!

haha, my mom tried to make reservations at the College Club at the school where I'm attending next year. i came home to find her on the phone with the reservation guy (who thought she was absolutely insane btw)...instead, i ordered her a mug. we're saving reservations until march at least.

Same here. I tried to make reservations at the Inn on campus, but they would only do reservations 6 months in advance (same with others in the area). So when we passed through the town two weeks ago, I stopped in. They still wouldn't give me a reservation, but they did put me on a list that they supposedly pull from when the reservations do open up (as if I believe that). I'll keepcalling, and also make a backup reservation in another hotel jic they don't look at the list and fill up. Errr... frustrating.

another nice thing about having D college in a major city. Lots to chose from and I have bought way in advance when I didn't want to spend the money on something else
( Like I already have graduation weekend 2005 booked, no she isn't graduating but we are all attending cause her sister really wants to see her friends and the hotel loves the dog!)

Which Portland hotel loves the dog? The only place I've found that will take my dog is the Best Western (Inn at the Meadows), which is WAY far away from Reed... and lately my H and I have been going to Portland a LOT on business.

the Mallory in southwest portland
http://www.hotelmallory.com/
Loves the dog all 80 lbs of her.
I couldn't believe it, they would lean over the desk and give her treats and didn't care when she jumped up, the other guests seemed to love her too. ( she did settle down) A high school ( cleveland?) is close by with grass for walking her first thing in morning also a coffee shop that isn't tullys or starbucks is about a block away
Free parking too in their own enclosed lot on the next block.
Lovely hotel, a little old ( ok really old has hexagonal bathroom tile)but kept up- great dining area, reminds me of Fredrick and Nelson restaurant- not really the food but the staff. The food is good, one of James Beards favorite places- not french though. Oh and free wireless
We just stayed at the waterfront Marriott in Seattle and they not only didn't have wireless but they charged money for their DSL!huh!

Thanks, EK4.

Glad to hear that the pets are taken care of. It will be hard for them when the young ones leave the nest, too.

Taking the dog to parent weekend is so funny. We ended up taking our dog on the college tours! At least campuses always have shady benches to hang out on. Consequently though, my husband saw about half the schools and I saw the other half. We can never agree on which campus had what, because one of us was always sitting someplace with the dog. Well you do what you have to do I guess. Sure hope I can find a sitter for parent weekend (right after I find a hotel!!!).

We were given information about parents weekend at the beginning of the school year. I booked my hotel through Expedia in October and found that some places were already booked. However, I did get a AAA discount.

This past fall when we picked up our daughter ( the reverse of what everyone else was doing, she had gone down to help with orientation) was the first time we had taken the dog. ( I really don't know how we all fit in the car) It was fun to take her, but it was really hot so we didn't get to do as much as we wanted, it would have been too hot to leave her outside Powells( bookstore) for instance so we mostly just tried to find shade.

Luckily, we have relatives in the town where DS goes to college! We have stayed with them a number of times, and always arrive with a nice gift basket of some sort. It's nice to be in a home with family. To be honest, I'm not a big hotel/motel fan.

We went to Parents Weekend last year and had a very nice time. However we may pass next year and go up another weekend when things are not as hectic. We will wait to see what is on the schedule and then decide. Obviously we will not be able to book the nearest hotel but we only used that to sleep in anyway, so a more distant one would not bother us at all. Hey, after driving 550 miles, what's another 15!

Another thought: if you suspect your child will need to fly somewhere far for an admitted students' weekend, it might be wise to book plane resvs now when cheap, so long as tickets can be exchanged. ED parents may want to see if your kids are even invited to the admitted students' weekend. My understanding is they are not always invited as their committment has been made.

we did go to admitted student weekend, ( which started on friday I think), but only once to parents weekend.( freshman year) We didn't really attend any of the planned activities and we found that schedule wise we were liable to see a lot more of her if we went another time ( parents weekend is right before midterms if I remember right)

It is an excellent suggestion as the students get a feel and begin to connect with some of the students they will be spending the next 4 years with. It is worth the effort to come and crash with a friend who attends your school.

At Dartmouth ED students are not invited to Dimensions (Dartmouths admitted student 4 day event) but if they can pay their way and get some one to put them up, they are welcomed to participate in the activities.

So, what types of activites are commonly planned at schools for Parents Weekend?

anybody else take their dog to parent's weekend?....sounds like something our family would do...

emerald, think they would like two great danes?
