Have you students had problems with mail being stolen at school?

My S has had two incidents this school year with envelopes with cards and small amounts of cash being sent from grandparents never reaching him in his college mail box. I know cash isn't safe to send, but this was like $10. I'm sure the envelopes looked like greeting cards. I have sent many boxes and envelopes and he has ordered all sorts of things via Amazon or eBay and never had issues. It has just been envelopes. I have informed any of the older relatives that did this to only send checks from now on.

He told me tonight one of his friends had a piece of mail opened, money taken from it and then resealed and put in her box.

No one shares mail boxes. I think a complaint to someone is warranted. I would assume this may be happening to other students there. It is a very small LAC.

S is a junior. Not aware of any problem with mail at his college.

You should notify the college post office so the manager can investigate. It’s possible the problem is in the grandparent’s post office, or with their mailman, but it could be someone in the college post office as well.

This happened to my younger D when she lived in the dorms (which is where mail was delivered). Same thing as you describe. Gift money from grandparents was removed from cards. Since that time, even though she has lived in apartments ever since off campus, grandparents will not send cash (they do send her checks though).

It looks like it’s already happened to at least 2 people at the school - definitely a complaint should be lodged.

At my previous school, my mail was constantly lost. I would have to argue with the front desk people, showing them that a slip had been signed (could see it online). I don’t think they ever stole anything though, they were just stupid. I would always have important things signed for, as some sort of proof.
