Congrats on being accepted early! I was accepted early last year into the class of 08. Haverford's a really great place. If you have any questions, feel free to holler at me and i'll try my best to help you out...I'm really bored and it's winter break, which pretty much explains why i'm on collegeconfidential again now that i'm already in college. lol anyways, congrats again and have a great second semester! (senioritis was awesome...)

congrats again to everyone who got in! i am really looking forward to meeting you guys next fall. mycow08, i was wondering if haverford, like a number of other schools, invites all the accepted students for a weekend there in the spring. if so, what do we get to do?

I think I can answer that question. Haverford holds an admitted students weekend in April...also known as "Spec Weekend". Most of the planned events for students and their parents take place on Sunday, but everyone is given the option to spend the Saturday Night right before with a student host. That night, the campus is pretty crowded with pre-frosh...so you'll have plenty of chances to meet current and potentially new Fords.

With respect to the "Why are you applying to Haverford" question on the supplement to the Common App:
There is only one line for the answer. I'm curious as to whether you answered in a few words/a sentence, or whether you wrote a supplemental paragraph/essay on why you're applying to Haverford and attached it to the supplement. Thanks in advance for any information.

thank you mattastic:) so you are a freshman at haverford- how has your experience been so far?
schoolmarm- i wrote a sentence for that question, but i did go over a bit and thus mine was two lines long...i don't think it's necessary to attach a supplementary essay or paragraph.

I also want to know how your experience was mattastic!!! Do you like it? What is the atmosphere in the school like? Is it a hard transition? How is the honor code affecting you (if it is) ect.. Thanks in advance.

Hey everyone- Yes. I am a member of the Class of 2008 in pursuit of a biology degreee with a possible concentration in Neural and Behavioral Science. You've probably heard a lot of things about Haverford, mainly the more well known stereotypes- socially awkward campus, emphasis on academics, a student body really involved in campus life, and a somewhat different dating scene that most schools. So, I'll comment on those areas I guess.

Yes, there are a fair share of really socially awkward people at Haverford. At the core, everyone here has a bit of dork in them, myself no doubt included (I wouldn't be playing KOTOR II right now if I didn't). Coupled with the fact that Haverford professors can assign a lot of work, there's always a group of people staying in on Friday and Saturday Nights to start their problem set or that ten page paper due on Monday. I can't say I'm one of those people though- I battled with 10 AP classes through my high school career, so I've pretty much established a pretty good consistency in getting work done in a timely manner. There hasn't been a weekend night this year that I haven't been out doing something with someone- dinner on the Main Line or in Philly, movies, concerts, dances, Haverparties, paying a visit to the old Bryn Mawr. Haverparties aren't really my scene- a lot of cheap alcohol and drunken people...drunken Haverpeople, which always makes for an interesting time. Dances can be somewhat lame, but there's the occasional great DJ. I get frustrated with some Haverford students comment on social life here... mainly because people often forget the City of Philadelphia is a mere 3 buck train ride away. There's so much to do there...especially with UPenn, Temple, and all the great places to head off to downtown (maybe because I'm a Philly native I know this more than others).

As for Academics, like I said, Haverford professors assign a lot of work. It's not uncommon to have 150 pages of reading to do in one night...in addition to a problem set or a paper. However, most professors here are genuinely great teachers. Grading is tough, but usually fair. 4.0's and 3.7s aren't handed out here like at some other schools...you REALLY have to earn those grades. Having said that, I've never felt overwhelmed by the workload here. Weekends have always been free for me, even some weeknights I find myself homeworkless thanks to some careful planning. And, mind you, I've somehow had time to play an insane amount of console gaming since I've been here despite my classwork. It's all relative to your course selection and professors though.

Extracurriculars are pretty big here. I'm a representative on Students Council and a member of their Budgeting Committee, so I've had the opportunity to interview most of the organizations on campus. Tons of cultural groups, community service groups, political groups, sports groups (hehe, Lame Ducks)...pretty much anything you can think of. For a school of our size, students here are definitely involved. In many ways, students run a fair share of what goes on at Haverford. Our administration is fairly small and they give students a lot of freedom to run the college.

Finally...dating scene. Well, Haverford has a rap for having only two types of relationships (1) Hook-ups and (2) Havermarriages- mainly because casual dating is difficult in a school of our size. I'm a "member" (if you will) of Haverford's relatively small gay population, so I can't comment too much on heterosexual dating here. I'd say there is a fair share of "hook-ups" and also a number of havermarriages already forming. But, realize that Bryn Mawr and Swarthmore are a bus or van ride away...and Philly is home to a rather large college student population. I'd say dating at Haverford is different than a lot of other campuses (because of our size and the socially inept backgrounds of SOME students here...you can't really speak in generalities). It's more of what you make of it...dating and college life in general.

So, yeah, there are certainly people at Haverford who don't like it here (sophomore year can be particularly boring if you're not involved in Customs...and a lot of juniors head abroad to get away from the Ford for a semester). I think my experience has been generally positive though...I like my classes, most of the people here are genuinely nice people, and I enjoy having the city so close. I'm actually filling out my customs application (yeah, trying to be a CP for the Class of 2009...one of you could already be my future frosh). If you ever feel like chatting about Haverford or anything I discussed...just hit me up on AIM: whzup444. I'm also a student host, so I may be seeing some of you in April for Spec Weekend.

~Matt

wow thanks alot for your thorough reply. I too am playing kotor 2 (just finished it). Anyway I may just take you up on that offer of talking more about the school. Haverford is probably tied for my #1 choice right now. My biggest fears are that the school would be a bit too small. Although I like a small school haverford is really tired and i am worried there will not be a big enough variety of people or i wont be able to find enough people I like ect... Also while I love the idea of the honor code, I found some of the cases on the website to seem kinda 1984'ish. Like the girl who glanced at her friend's computer and the other girl who got expelled for parking with a fake permit. How is the honor code seen on campus? Does it really develop an atmosphere of respect and trust or do just the opposite?

Hmmm...Honor Code is always a hot topic at Haverford. If you decide to attend the college, you'll have your own Customs People devoted just to discussing the code (HCOs) and a few abstract discussions after Customs Week. The most obvious effect of the Honor Code is the ability to have self-scheduled and unproctored exams...professors genuinely respect students at Haverford. Outside of that, I think some aspects of Honor Code, particularly some of the judgements made by Honor Council are a little harsh. It definitely has legitimate and necessary use on campus. Definitely not foreboding...we're not a group of narcs here looking for people to break it, lol. I wouldn't say our Honor Code is perfect, but it definitely does, in theory, foster a sense of respect and trust. Definitely give the Code a read if you're interested in what it's all about. I haven't seen it affect my life socially here too much, and I certainly haven't been in conflict with the academic portion of it. It's definitely talked about a lot on campus and a big part of life here...but something that's stays more in the background. At least in my experience.

Thanks soo much for your replies, guessing your name is matt...I'm soo excited for next year....wb, where in NY are you from?

I am from Westchester. Thanks again for your replies Matt. (I am also named Matt btw)

No problem. Thanks for entertaining a bored Haverford student on winter break. If anyone has a question about the Ford, feel free to IM me: whzup444. Also, check out the LiveJournal community. I met a few Haverford frosh before I came to campus last August.
