Haverford ED 2017 Discussion

I heard that they are just sending out snail mail, unless you live abroad.

So we should get our decision within the next 3 days, right? Or is snail mail even slower? O.o OMG! GOOD LUCK EVERYBODY! I hope we all get in! Then we can hang out near that cool Thai restaurant in Philly and talk about the honor code or something similar haha xD

Yeah that sounds fun! Good luck everyone! I’m soooo nervous. I live like an hour or so away and from the past forums I’ve read people in my area may get them a day or two after they send it

ginger, I also live almost exactly an hour away! maybe we will find out tomorrow!

I live in northwestern PA and I’m almost positive I am the only person in my area who applied… Lol. I really, really, really hope it turns out well for all of us. I wrote about the strangest topic for my honor code essay xD

What did you write about?? I hope we all get in too :)

I wrote about how I took charge of my history class when my teacher inaccurately represented my religion (hindu). Basically he said we all worshipped donkeys, monkeys and veggies… And he was completely serious. So I discussed how cultural exposure is crucial to creating an open and intellectually aware environment and how we all have to create that environment ourselves.

Not sure how they’ll take the whole “taking charge” thing, but I’m hoping it goes over well. I kind of went with my gut on my essays and what I thought was best for me. Hope it worked! What did you write about?

That sounds like a wonderful essay really, i wish I could read it haha. I wrote about how respect and mutual interest in the subject at hand are needed to create an environment of open communication, and I talked about a summer program I attended in which I participated in many group discussions (and I hate public speaking!) because everyone in the group seemed really sincerely interested and were respectful of each others comments, so it made me feel comfortable enough to speak up and be engaged in te discussions, which really enriched my whole experience. Yours sounds a lot better, I made the mistake of not really editing my essays too much/having people edit them for me, I kind of just wanted to get them over with haha! I submitted my supplement the same night I wrote it! Afterwards I had that feeling like “omg what have I done” haha but honestly I probably wouldn’t have changed it too much anyways. What other schools are u applying to?

OMG, I’m so nervous! I foud out that another girl in the area applied ED, and I don’t think they want too many students from VT… But I feel like I have as good a chance as any! Good luck to you all, and I hope to see you next fall! (Ha, I just read that aloud and it rhymed.)

For the honor code essay I wrote about the conflict in being the editor in chief/a writer and being in a Catholic School that censored various articles of mine because they were not inline with the Church’s stances. I just basically talked about how an open dialogue encourages introspection and perspective.

Then for my common app essay I wrote about neuroscience and running, playing off the whole neurons and action potentials and how both of my passions are intimately intertwined. I think Coach Donnelly liked it.

I have to say, my friends hated writing their essay but I actually enjoyed writing these. Although I am not looking forward to writing more if I don’t get in.Good luck everyone

Mangotanggo, that sounds really neat! It’s cool to be able to speak openly! Pretty valuable if you ask me. I like public speaking in front of strangers, but sometimes, I get really scared if it’s in front of people I know. Especially those who are a tad judgemental. I like it! I freaked out over my Honor Code essay xD I actually wrote two versions, had them both proofread over and over agan and then picked one. I think I fit the definition of neurotic at the time…

I am also applying to GWU, NYU, Wake Forest, Mount Holyoke and Case Western!

Runnercqr, that sounds like an AMAZING essay! That’s a really neat experience! As Editor-In-Chief of my own school newspaper, I can appreciate those tough choices. I’m the political columnist and I recently wrote an article on the fiscal cliff that quoted a teacher who was a bit more conservative leaning and the administration nearly had a tizzy. “TEACHERS HAVE POLITICAL OPINIONS??!?!?!” You’d think my superintendent had never considered such an idea!

Crossing my fingers for you guys! Just remember - the acceptance envelopes are big but fairly thin, so don’t expect anything exciting when they come. Just because it looks boring doesn’t mean it’s bad news!

accepted :)

When did you find out/how far do you live from haverford?

I live abroad and I found out yesterday.

Congrats!!! You got me so exited though, I thought I was gonna be getting a letter today haha

Thanks! The date on the letter was December 11th by the way.

So did you actually receive a letter or an email? I thought international students received emails. Also out of curiosity, what country are you from?

They emailed me a scanned version of the letters. And I’m from eastern Asia.

Congratulations theblues!!! :)
