For people who have visited both schools or know enough about them, what are the main differences between the people at Carleton and people at Haverford, and how they spend their free time?

The biggest difference with free time is that Philly is 20 minutes away by public transportation. I believe student groups are trying to be more organized to utilize this important resource (monthly bus trips sponsored by student council to go to "1st Friday" which is when art galleries in Olde City open for public viewing, alumni living in Haverford House in West Philly planning small tours of different city communities for students, more "urban" community service opportunities...). Also, DC is a short trip away and many students at some point make it down there for a conference or a protest or two with transportation sponsored by HC.

You have to remember that the kind of kids who choose LACs (often over larger and more prestigious universities) are pretty self-selected in terms of their interests, personalities and educational goals. Thus, the differences you're asking about are pretty small in the greater scheme of things. If you're a minority student and cultural diversity in important to you, the only other thing of note is that HC is about 32% diverse and with BMC and Philly so close, may make transition to college less isolating.

hope that helps.

Thanks! I'm pretty sure Haverford is my first choice.
