Haverford vs. Claremont McKenna

Hello,

I know Haverford has a stellar science department, and although CMC is a more political/economic centered school, their Joint Science program and the 5 C Consortium is extremely unique. (I believe 100% of CMC's 2008 medical school applicants got into their 1st or 2nd choice medical school)

I was wondering for someone who was interested in getting into a great medical school, would you choose Haverford or CMC? and why?

Also, study abroad, internships, and research is a huge factor in making my decision.

I’m also considering how easy/hard it is to get into popular science classes, and the size of the classes as well…

Thanks!

Most science courses don’t have enrollment limits. The only upper-level course that was competitive to get into this semester was Stem Cell Biology, taught by President Steve Emerson.

The current science courses have the following enrollment:

Biology: 4, 4, 6, 10, 13, 13, 14, 15, 18, 25, 29, 32, 33, 35, 53, 81
Chemistry: 8, 10, 10, 17, 18, 23, 24, 34, 61, 95
Physics and astronomy: 4, 5, 6, 7, 9, 9, 9, 17, 17, 18, 21, 29, 35
Math: 3, 9, 12, 13, 13, 14, 19, 20, 21, 23, 23, 38
Computer Science: 7, 10, 13, 15, 16, 20, 97

This does not include lab sections, individual research tutorials or independent study courses, where you will each get quite a bit more personal attention.

I am afraid that’s as much as I can help you. As a math major at Bryn Mawr, I don’t feel qualified to talk about the science research at Haverford, the quality of their pre-med program or study abroad opportunities for Haverford students. I hope that someone more knowledgeable will chime in.

I would like to point out that many more Bryn Mawr students take science classes at Haverford than vice versa. I think that speaks to the quality of Haverford’s science programs!
