Having a car at UCSD Freshman Year

I've heard a lot of stuff about having a car at UCSD freshman year, such as it being unnecessary and that parkings permits cost a lot, etc.

Can any current or former UCSD students tell me what its like? Pros and Cons? Is it worth it?

I got accepted to Sixth college if that helps at all.

pros:
-if you’re wanting to find a job, it makes off campus jobs more easily accessible
-you can drive wherever, whenever (as long as you have gas. lol.) so it’s super convenient
-you don’t have to take buses if you don’t want to. and if you’re lazy like i am, you don’t have to walk to the bus stops
-they can take you that the buses can’t

cons:
-sixth college has almost no undergrad parking anymore since they changed one of the two lots to b spots
-permits are really expensive (more than double the cost of the SHIP health insurance)
-you will be “that guy/girl” on campus with a car. people will hit you up for rides.

in my opinion, if money is not an issue for you i don’t see why bringing your car would be a big deal. it honestly, makes things way more convenient. i actually didn’t bring my car until this year (i’m a 3rd year living off campus, and working in hillcrest), but my roommate had one so she let me borrow it on occasion. if money is a factor, don’t do it.

(i’m assuming you have a car, but if you don’t, i would never suggest buying yourself a car just to bring to campus freshman year.)

Parking permits are expensive and it’s difficult to find parking after 8am.

A car isn’t necessary to access the two main shopping complexes around UCSD. Most of the activities you participate in at SD will probably be on-campus anyways.
Also, if you bring a car be ready to drive your friends around!

These are the three reasons I would imagine bringing a car would be justified:

 1. You plan on going home often
 2. You need the car to access an internship
 3. You are intent on exploring the city on a regular basis
