Do most people have a car in college? Specifically at UCLA, UCSD, UCI, UCD, and SDSU. I am trying to figure out whether or not to keep my car through college (which is not paid off and won't be for a long time) or go without one.

Why would you own a car you cant pay off?

I go to school in SoCal, and it all depends on what you want to do. I'm the clubbing type, and most of the good clubs are located in Hollywood, so it requires driving. Best bet would be to find people with cars down there and freeload off them.

If you can't afford a car, its not worth it.

Several UC's make it difficult , if not impossible, to have a car on campus, especially for freshman.

For UCD - first year students living on campus can't buy parking permits. That makes it extremely difficult & quite a hassle for first year students to have a car. Luckily, having a car isn't necessary. Davis is very flat, making bikes a great (& quite popular) form of transportation. Many professors even ride bikes to campus. UCD also has a great bus system which is free to undergrads - the buses hit most of the major apartment complexes off campus & all buses go to campus.

I can't speak for other schools, and this question is location dependent, but I'd guess the owning a car in a big city school like UCLA would be a problematic and expensive. Hopefully one of your friends will have a car & you can bum rides when necessary from them.

you might be able to get a permit at UCSD, but you don't get a guaranteed parking spot. UCI i think is a little easier, don't know anything about SDSU. you won't get a permit at UCLA.
