Having a car in the city?

So, I live in rural Maine and I've known for quite a while that I've wanted to attend a college in the city. So far I've been accepted to 4 colleges in Boston, New York and D.C., and I'll probably be attending Georgetown, located in D.C.. So ,my question to anyone out there who might be experienced is whether or not they think a car in the city is efficient/necessary.

I don't own a car right now, and I was considering buying a cheap used one, but I thought that moving to a city with ample public transportation opportunities might make it a little unnecessary. I really don't have any experience with city living, so I'd appreciate any advice.

Thanks,

DC has great public transportation. You won’t need a car

Agreed with pyroza, you definitely won’t need a car in DC. The subway is really simple and easy to use.

You won’t need a car in DC for sure.

Boston and NYC, the same. Actually, in NYC a car might be a liability rather than an asset. There’d be nowhere to park it, unless you want to pay hundreds a month for a garage or risk it being broken into on the street.

In none of those cities would a car be necessary
