Having a car on campus?

Yeah...im a rising senior...but I really wanna know if freshmen in college bring their cars with them? or do you guys take bus/ bike or something?

so many answers for that question...

a lot of colleges dont allow freshmen parking

a lot of colleges do have bus systems

most people just walk to classes

most make friends with people who have cars if you dont have one

bikes are around...

personally, im not taking a car frosh year first semester.. if im allowed to have a car, im gonna bring it back 2nd semester with me. tons of people say to get a "true" college experience- dont take a car.

but if everyone wants a true college experience then no ones gonna bring a car and then no one can go out of town or even go around town...=no beach on weekends :-/

greyhound, local busses, trains and taxis can take you to beaches....

not everyone considers a true college experience as not having a car... thats just what most parents want, at least for frosh year, because then you cant go off into town whenever you feel like it, or go to the beach every weekend.. instead, you'll be studying. at least thats what your parents think youll be doing if you dont have a car.

just walk or bike you lazy *****

"just walk or bike you lazy *****"

Seriously. I grew up in Europe, and when I came here for college, it hit me very hard that so many kids here are spoiled by having their own cars. Then, when they go to college and have to ride the bus (HORRORS!) they have the audacity to complain about not having their own car. It makes me want to kill.

no way no car for me. I'm going to boston. i tried to drive there once, let's just say it didn't go over so well.

ThinkDifferent... remember, most kids in America come from suburbs, where there is no public transportation to speak of, that's why most of them have cars. Seriously, there are deffinitely no busses around where i come from.

If I get into Stern, I'm not bringing a car. Period. New York City, driving and inexperienced driver don't mix too well.

But if I end up at a school like Wesleyan or Colgate yes I'm bringing a car...:)

no buses where i live either... every kid basically needs a car.

Very good bus system here. Beach close by. Town an easy walk from campus.

some things about bringing a car to college:
1. many places don't allow it first year
2. many schools have no substantial parking near the dorms
3. many schools charge insane amounts to park on campus
4. your car is at higher risk for theft and break in
5. everyone will constantly want to borrow your car or have you drive them somewhere.

Mine's coming with me but that's more for ease of getting home than any other reason- I dealt with the bus all last year and it was absolutely fine.

if you go to school in an urban area there's no need for a car

u dont need a car in the city neither my sister her ex or her current bf who all live in the city and her current bf went to college in NYC also..(SVA hes a manager for a cartoon thingy..) they all rarely use a car..we even r getting rid of my sisters piece of crap car she never uses(its on its last string its not that bad but its always needing something...my sisters bf has a car in boston but lives in ny soo he only uses it the occasional times he comes home otherwise i think his sister uses it...My sisters ex got his drivers liscense but he didnt use it once he went 2 college in Chicago(U of Chicago) And i swear the guy used to be such a bad driver once he Got back...he never uses his car nor does his sister now that she is in boston(at BU him and his sister used to share a car)

oh and ps: Im still close w/ my sisters exs family...my moms close friend is his mom...Since yrs b4 they dated...and his older sister was like a sister to me when i started hs..and she was a senior

dude... i souped up my eclipse and i was thinkin that i could go street racin at night to make a few bucks...thats the primary reason i wanna bring mine...i mean that worked in high school

^that depends on where you're going to school. Besides almost assuredly getting your permit pulled if you get caught street racing and arrested, there might not even BE a street racing presence where you go to school. Might be better off finding a more consistent (and legal) way to make money.

maybe...good point

i might just ride the bus or hitch hike or something....

-" but if everyone wants a true college experience then no ones gonna bring a car and then no one can go out of town or even go around town...=no beach on weekends :-/ "

Not to mention, when the Soviets return, you will have no means of escape from the invasion. Well, I suppose you could use public transportation, but I'd rather take my chances with the Soviets.

It totally depends on where someone's going to school.

Honestly, I can't imagine not bringing my car to school with me. LA Tech is located in a (somewhat) rural area only two and a half to three hours from my home in (definitely) rural East Texas. The only buses that run here are school buses...and I've never seen any buses trucking along in Ruston other than school buses, either. I'll need my car for trips to Walmart, home, and random other places...but will definitely walk to class.

Also...about how "everyone will constantly want to borrow your car or have you drive them somewhere"...that's what the words "sorry, but no" (possibly paired with my "are you a moron?" look) are for. Nobody drives my car but me, and I'm not about to taxi anyone any place that I'm not already going to.

The "college experience" thing makes no sense at all, though. I guess that's more directed towards city schools?

I go to school in a somewhat rural area. Not really rural, the town has about 40,000 people, but it's spread out. You can walk to the little shops downtown like eating places and stuff, from campus, but to get to Wal-mart or the mall or something you definitely need a car. I didn't have a car last year, but I ended up making friends with people who did and we would just go places together, like Walmart or friends' houses that were further out of town. My school runs a bus service that makes it easy to get to campus if you live off campus, but alot of people still have cars and drive. It's pretty hard to get around to alot of places without one. I will have my car with me this year.

I'm also going to school in a VERY small town, but I'm not taking a car. I don't have one to take right now, but the kids who go there say that you can get along okay without one. All the essentials are within walking distance, and there's school transit that goes to the Walmart and larger shoping center 15 minutes down the road. On the weekends the school transit goes to larger malls, ski resorts, and other things that aren't so close.
