Having a job freshman year?

For any current students, is it feasible to have an off-campus job your freshman year? Does your academic schedule usually consume any free time you would have? Do you have any personal experiences?

I'm going to need a job because I'm going to need some source of income, and was just wondering if there are any opportunities close by and whether or not I would be able to keep one because of my classes. I'd prefer to work off-campus, but I'm certainly not ruling out on-campus work.

Can I ask why you would prefer off campus? On campus employment gives you much more flexible hours, and really isn't bad work at all.

I worked 12 hours a week on campus. Even taking 17 credits, it wasn't a problem in terms of time management. It was nice being able walk to work in just five minutes, but I suppose on the flipside you get to bring a car if you hold an off-campus job and can use the car for many other purposese.

One of the biggest reasons to get a job off campus is the pay. Many campus jobs pay minimum wage. I was fortunate enough to start off at nearly 50% more, but such jobs are hard to come by unless you look off campus.

the minimum wage is going up to 7.50 an hour sooner or later...

Haha... I wish. Not before I graduate.
