I am basically at at point where I have no idea what I want to do with my life anymore.
Before coming to college I was all "med school, doctor, med school etc" I knew I was gonna be a doctor and my parents pretty much accepted the fact that I wanted to be a doctor.

Now, I'm not so sure. I've been doing research and some self-searching and I don't think that I am willing to spend the majority of my young life in school. I wanna travel, I wanna backpack through Europe, I wanna volunteer in impoverished countries! Now I'm beginning to lean towards research, but research what! I know I like biology, but thats not enough! Plus cardiothoracic surgeons (the type of doctor I want to be) make waaaay more than researchers (even though money shouldn't be a factor, everyone thinks about it).

Basically now I'm feeling like I'm wasting my parents money and I should just drop out and run the family business :(

I know this was kind of a rant but I had to get it out?

ok i’m in the exact position. like completely the SAME.
except i never wanted to be a doctor, my parents made/encouraged me to do so. (yeah they were THOSE type of parents).

i realized that i dont want to spend my twenties literally buried under books. especially since i was never interested really in becoming a doctor, i would burn and die in med school

in my twenties i want to go out and travel, experience life before i settle down

…so in the end i changed my major to accounting (cuz i love math), which makes good money too…i think.

do what you want, but if you’re all about living THAT good life when you’re older, pick a major where you can make good money in the future, and also have a life.
remember there is a REASON why doctors get paid very well, they gave up their twenties to work like all hours of the day
and also actually like what you do.

I’m kind of in that position. I’m leaning toward becoming a doctor, though I’m not entirely convinced that’s the route I want to take. I have a little bit of time left before I absolutely need to decide.

At least you have the luxury of falling back on a family business…

@Manayy, yeah and the sheer amount of hours doctors work has me totally terrified. I mean 12 hour work days! geez louise! When will I have time to play with my future kids?
And good for you for changing your major, there’s no reason for you to be unhappy. I would consider changing my major to business too, just because its an easy career path for me, but I intensely hate business lol.

Pea: yeah, and DWB, is also something I’m considering. but then there’s also the amount of time I’ll have to spend before I’m a full fledged doctor and I want to spend that time enjoying life. But I think with research I could still make a big difference, and enjoy life… hmmm…

oh and my above post, the “^^” was meant for schaden

I thought I was alone. Welcome to the club.

I was all for being a veterinarian since I was young. But now that am in my second semester of college, I realized am not cut out for that. My study habits are poor. I would never make it in to med school with that.

As of late I’ve been considering teaching in improverished countries but not volunteering. I know for a fact that I want to help people just not American people. I might even consider switching my major to social work, who knows.

Research in biology means you’ll need an advanced degree, like a PhD. That would also mean spending your 20s in school. Also, the pace of research is plodding, it’s very slow.

@Kelly, good for you! And I was only kidding about the dropping out part, I think my parents would disown me!

@Pea, good point, but at least the hours after grad school are more stable than being a doctor, I can handle 9-5 with foreseeable vacation time better than 8-8 with my schedule revolving around others needs. Do you have any suggestions on biology fields I should consider? I just have to be able to do something where I’m active, I hate deskwork and office work.

@DCHurricane, I think I would die of boredom lol.

yeaaa and adding on, I don’t have a problem with undergrad studying, there’s always summers and other breaks and stuff for relaxing. I just am not prepared for intense amounts of time commitments post-grad. I want a family, and a life and some sort of stability.

Yeah I wish I could do my residency in a UN refugee camp in Somalia, or something.

I have an Iraqi friend who suffered a stroke … in the middle of a desert in a Jordanian refugee camp. He survived with most of his wits intact, except for an occasional lump in his throat. (He at one point completely lost his speech, but he gained it back.)

^ As long as my basic needs are met, I am fairly certain that I will always give a ____ about other people to some extent ;). And animals too…I have a soft spot for animals :p.
