Having a motorcycle at UGA?

Is this feasible? (parking, storage, and other issues)

Is it worth bringing my bike to Athens with me?

You might want to read this:
[Scooter parking policies likely to change (w/map) | The Red and Black](http://www.redandblack.com/2010/02/01/scooter-parking-policies-likely-to-change/)
Motorcycles must be permitted like cars and parked in a designated lot. So, you won’t be able to just motor up to your classes. Look at the map in the link. It shows the # of spaces in each lot.

Not entirely true, th1921. There are many scooter corrals, but those have nothing to do with motorcycle parking. Scooter parking is only designated for <50cc vehicles, though I think up to 150cc scooters have the permit/park there (both are far below any actual motorcycle size). There are many places/lots with special motorcycle parking (for ACTUAL motorcycles), these are, say off Cedar street on a little offshoot of the Boyd lot, and I believe across from Psychology/Journalism is a motorcycle area also. I’m sure there are more, I just frequent the psych, chem, and math departments so those ones are the ones I’ve taken notice of. I have seen some motorcycles in the ECV parking garage parked like cars, but I don’t know how that works with the whole hangtag permit thing.

One perk at UGA is motorcycle/scooter only commuters can get a free, one use parking pass (for a car/truck) to the north campus lot (near downtown) every so often. As far as I know, if you have a motorcycle parking permit, you most likely can commute to the different motorcycle parking areas at will (they don’t seem to be blocked in with gates like the lots they are near), though they may not be quite as common as scooter parking (because, really, who wants their motorcycle hanging out of a spot into a busy streetwhere it is tight and many busses have to go by, as many of the scooter areas are set up - since scooters are usually alot smaller than a motorcycle).

I have ridden a 600cc motorcycle around campus, and it’s never been touched, even when leaving the helmets in the helmet locks and storing all the gear inside, where people could take it if they so decided to. The one thing I would be worried about is riding with these crazy drivers in Athens. There has been many a person who seems to ‘not see’ when we ride around town. This includes riding beside a motorcycle in the same lane, as if it is a bike, and cutting off a motorcycle while turning when the motorcycle is right up to the point the car is turning (distances not even a crazy person would attempt if the motorcycle were a car instead.) Wear a helmet and gear for sure, and enjoy!

Edit to add: Super plus with motorcycle in Athens, though, is some downtown parking motorcycle spots are free even on the busiest of weekend nights, when one usually has to drive all the way to the downtown parking lots on Dougherty St to park a car.

Edit to add part 2:
LOOK HERE! http://www.parking.uga.edu/maps/MCSC.pdf</a> It is a motorcycle and scooter parking map, showing designated motorcycle lots in pink (scooter lots in green). Looks as if the motorcycle spots are alot more convenient/spread out on campus. And they have 365 motorcycle spaces across campus (and there aren’t usually more than one or two motorcycles parked in any single area I’ve seen. As opposed to the scooter mob mentality of a bazillion scooters parked on sidewalks and lawns near full scooter areas.)

Wow, thank you so much for your informative post.

Avoiding the “mobs” of scooters fighting for parking space would be nice.

But would it be just as easy to walk/bicycle to and from classes? Or are the parking spaces close enough to buildings to make riding a motorcycle to and from classes a more convenient option.

i’m moving near UGA soon… I just sold my motorcycle but I was thinking maybe I should throw a bicycle in the back of my truck lol, might be a lot easier to get to classes that way. what do you guys think?

The campus is close-knit enough that you should be able to walk to all of your classes. Careful planning will keep you from making too long of a stretch between classes that are in a row, and Oasis will prevent you from signing up for classes that it thinks are too far apart. Do the environment a favor and walk/bicycle/take campus busses to and from classes. The only thing about riding a bicycle is that the campus is hilly. I personally couldn’t do it (Ag Hill SUCKS on a bike), but I see plenty of people doing it. Do that instead of a motorcycle!

Walking is doable, but can be crazy sometimes. I usually skip the bus and just walk after having to park at one end of campus (east campus parking) and since I have 2 majors, one in the science/math area (Ag Hill) and the other up in north campus (Psych) I routinely take the goodness knows how many stairs from Ag hill down to the bridge at Tate (if I had to guess, I’d give a conservative one of it being equal to at least 4 flights). Awesome work out, but crazy on hot days. Once your first week is done, you’ll be able to tell if walking between classes is feasible for you.

Buses make campus easy, but get there or wake up early, trying to get on a bus last minute before class time usually means a stuffed bus (especially orbit, I’ve had to wait through 2-3 of them to go by before I could get on one for classes around 11am or 12:20pm). Some also stop running/change their routes by 5 or 6pm. Maps are available online and on the buses, so they are easy to figure out the timing for after looking it up and using them a few times. After your first semester you’ll probably know how to get anywhere you need to or want to go on campus via bus just from using them or seeing them stopping around campus.

If you have a bike, campus is easy enough, but know the rules of the road (stay off sidewalks, use bike lanes when available and otherwise ride in the car lane like a normal vehicle) many bicyclists truck it through the sidewalks and I’ve personally seen a couple people get hit by them. Also, to get around the rest of the city, Athens Transit is free for students with UGA card and they have bike racks on front!
