Having Some Conflicts with My UVa Application...Please Help.

My friend and I are both applying to UVa

For the favorite word essay we both picked the same word by accident. Keep in mind the content of our essays is entirely different from one another.

For the College of Arts of Sciences essay we both ended up writing essays about learning a song that challenged us. Keep in mind we picked different songs and play different instruments.

I'm worried that UVa might suspect of of cheating or something like that since we have similar essay topics and go to the same school.

Should I be worried?

YEs very very worried anything like that seems suspicious, because you both go to the same school, and that it is very uncommon for something like that to happen…Your best bet is to call the addmission office and explain what happened

Ahhh now I’m really worried.

I suppose I’ll call admissions and explain myself, I’m afraid that they might take my explanation as an admission of guilt!

Hopefully their honor code is true and they take my word for it.

Any more input?

Greatly appreciated.

I doubt you need to worry. The essay topics are a means to get applicants to open up about themselves, so that the admissions officers can get some sense of their personality and their ability to write coherently. It doesn’t really matter how applicants choose to interpret each question: what word they pick, for instance, for the “favorite word” essay. As long as you and your friend develop your essays differently, you’re not going to have seem to have “cheated.” I’m sure tons of kids write about learning music, and I bet there are lots of essays on the same “favorite words” as well.

Yeah altough we both picked the same word we developed our essays entirely differently, if it weren’t for the same word I wouldn’t be worried.

My main concern is the CAS essay. We both wrote about music. I wrote about learning a challenging song on upright bass and he wrote about acoustic guitar.
