I am an undergraduate business student at the University of Miami. My current major is Legal Studies (Business Law) with a minor in Music Business and Entertainment Industries.
I definitely want to go to law school to practice entertainment law because I have a passion for both industries. I actually really want to pursue the joint JD/MBA for grad school. My problem is that I don't think I have the right major, in the sense that let's say I don't get into law school or I want to work in a different field. Also, many lawyers have said that law school wants variety and not just a pre-law major. Should I switch to Economics or something else as a Plan B? My dad says Econ is a great major to prepare you for law school and even working in the business world; but, I didn't like Econ 1 and 2 when I took them. I have a passion for law but if it's what's best I'll switch Econ.. I don't know what I should do.

Law schools do not care about variety, they care only about your GPA. With that in mind, you should major in something you like and can do well in. I also generally advise college students to either double major or minor in something that provides skills. Law is a tough field to get ahead in, and entertainment law especially hard. Many students get near graduation and find out that law school really isn’t for them, or they flop on the LSAT and can’t get into a good school. A major that provides skills provides a backup plan to sell employers, should you need to.

Econ can be a great major for just general life, but if you weren’t enthused about Econ 1 & 2, I would not recommend going down that path.

I would not recommend Legal Studies as a major. It offers no value by itself, and to the extent the law schools consider rigor at all - very very minor point at a few of them – Legal Studies is not considered rigorous.

Can you do undergrad Biz instead? That will give you enough business courses/exposure such that you probably won’t need an MBA.

Political science is what im thinking about doing right now, of course i have a backup plan to work as a paralegal for a while if I flop LSAT’s and have to retake them.

that said, a business-like degree is a great backup plan.

I would not major in “pre- law.” I agree with your Dad that Econ is a great major, both for law school and as a back-up plan. However, if you don’t like the subject, you’re not likely to do well. Law schools aren’t too concerned with your major. IMO some majors better prepare one for law school or are advantageous for certain practice areas. For example, accounting for tax law, Econ or finance for banking law, engineering for patent law and theater for litigation (haha). English and philosophy are both good majors to prepare one for law school.
