Alright, this is long so bear with me. i've narrowed down my college list to a few schools. I plan on going to business school after college so i'm looking for universities that are stong in economics/business/marketing. Here is my potential list so far:

Duke: (ED) reach
UVA: (out of state) reach
UNC-CH: (out of state) reach
Georgetown: reach

Cornell: (legacy) slight reach??
UC San Diego: (out of state) slight reach

Emory: match
U of Michigan: (out of state) match
U of florida: (out of state) match

The problem is that i'm having a lot of trouble picking safety schools. Based on my stats, what would you recommend as a safety if you were in my position? Also if you could, comment on my chances at the schools i have already listed (i.e. should i consider florida a safety or a match?)
Thanks so much for your time :)

i'm also very flexible when it comes to location (although i prefer suburban) and size (medium's best though). I would, however, like to be somewhere south of New England. :)

yeah, U-Mich would definitely be high on my list (my dad went there for med school and loved it)... probably #2 or 3... except that i really want to go south (i.e. duke, emory, UVA). Any ideas for safeties?

Can i classify any of the colleges i have already listed as safeties? For example, are U of Florida, emory, or UC San Diego already safeties or are they just solid matches? Likewise, is Cornell a match because i'm a legacy or is it still a reach? And what about ED to Duke? Any chance at all?

Actually ,in reality UC's should not be considered a match to anyone from out of state, because of Calif's funding problems and cutbacks. Last year they had to reject 5000 qualified instate students because of the budget problems, and it probably won't be any different this year

BigE, apply to Michigan as early as possible. They have rolling admissions and accept or deny you within a month or so of receiving your application. With that information you will either have a safety in your pocket or the opportunity to recalibrate your list.

I wouldn't worry so much about classifying your less selectives into high safeties or low matches. Just be sure to find one that you have more than a 50% chance of getting into. How about your home state U? Do they have an honors program that may appeal to you?

Do you plan to continue to play sports? Are you recruitable? Think about division III schools and contact the coaches.

A lot of kids who like Georgetown also like George Washington and American.

thank you very much, Momrath... very helpful. Unfortunately though, i would never consider attending U-mass, even an honors program (not a very nice campus in my opinion) and i'm most likely not a recruitable athlete even at D3 schools. I really appreciate the advice though about Michigan. Thats a really good idea.

BigE, Good luck to you. Michigan's my almamater so I'm somewhat prejudiced. :) My son goes to Williams. You might have a look at Williams and Amherst even though they are reaches and don't comply with your geographic criteria. They do seem to jibe with your profile (sports focus) and objectives (economics/business/marketing), so they're worth a look. Also, Bentley for a good safety.

Duke is a great school but for safeties might look at some Patriot League schools like Colgate and Holy Cross. HC does not require SAT's. Both Colgate and Holy Cross have great school spirit although not south of New England. Then there's Davidson.

yeah i was thinking about looking at some patriot league schools. Davidson too, although i'm not sure i should be considering Davidson a safety.
